Women's basketball picks up RMAC road win in dominant fashion

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Guided by three double-figure scoring outings and three dominant quarters of play, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team earned its second win of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season to improve to 5-9 overall, 2-4 RMAC.

The Skyhawks shot 44.9 percent (31-of-69) from the field and 32 percent (8-of-25) from three. The Griffins shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field and struggled beyond the arc with a 16.7 percent (4-of-24) clip. Fort Lewis was outrebounded 49-37 thanks to a 17-rebound performance from Maunayia Harrigfeld.

Senior Livia Knapp led the team with 13 points (6-of-9 FG) to go along with four assists. Sophomore Natalie Guanella followed with 12 points (5-of-7 FG) for her third double-digit point performance of the season. Senior Darla Hernandez put up 11 rebounds and seven boards while Eva Kingston led the team with eight rebounds.

The Griffins scored on their first two possessions before a three from Knapp made it a one-point game. Westminster reached double figures at the 6:31 mark and the teams went scoreless for the next two minutes to reach the media timeout. The teams traded jumpers out of the break, including a pair from Guanella and Knapp for a 12-9 score. The Skyhawks turned in a handful of offensive boards to stay within striking distance and trailed by six with two minutes remaining. Westminster scored its first three of the contest with under one minute to go, and Ryan scored her first points of the afternoon in the next possession for a 19-12 score.

Fort Lewis scored for the first three points of the second quarter to force an early Westminster timeout with the score at 19-15. The Griffins' scoreless streak continued for five minutes, meanwhile, the Skyhawks surged and tied the game at 19-all following a layup by sophomore Trista Hoobler. Westminster finally scored by going one-of-two from the free-throw line to reclaim a narrow lead with 4:48 on the clock. Hernandez gave Fort Lewis its first lead of the day after a three-point play, and the team added two more at the stripe to make it 24-21 with under three minutes remaining in the half. Westminster knocked down its first field goal of the quarter with 2:02 on the clock, and Fort Lewis eventually headed to the locker room with a 31-28 lead.

The Skyhawks continued their momentum as the third quarter got underway with layups from Hoobler and Ryan extending the lead to seven. After a brief scoreless skid, Knapp knocked down another jumper, bringing her point total to 11 for a 39-30 lead. Then, it was freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez who went to work with seven straight points to make it 47-33 with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter. The good times kept rolling for Fort Lewis with another scoring run, this one featuring 10 points, making it 57-35. The Griffins were the last to score in the quarter thanks to a three-pointer as the Skyhawks carried a 57-38 lead into the final quarter.

Westminster chipped away at the difference with the first three points of the quarter, but freshman Katie Lamb eliminated the progress with her first three of the afternoon. Lamb continued to contribute out of the media timeout with a driving layup for a 64-46 lead at the six-minute mark. Another scoring run benefited Fort Lewis to make it a 73-46 score before a Westminster jumper slowed things down at the three-minute point. The Griffins went on to spend time at the free throw line in the final minutes of play, and Fort Lewis ended things with another made three by Lamb to wrap up a commanding 78-55 win.
