Coulter’s first score of the season serves as game winner in 1-0 road shutout

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Senior Josie Coulter scored her first goal of the season in the 73rd minute, a header off a corner kick service from junior Amber Otts, to give the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Black Hills State University on Friday night.

Fort Lewis improved to 7-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play while Black Hills State dropped to 4-7-2, 1-6-2 RMAC.

The shutout was the Skyhawks' ninth of the year and extends its shutout streak to over 450 minutes with the last goal against the team coming via a penalty kick in the final 30 seconds against Mines (Sept. 28).

The teams were even with 12 shots apiece while Fort Lewis owned a 5-4 advantage I shots on goal. The Skyhawks earned five corners and allowed just one for the Yellow Jackets.

Coulter was the difference maker with her goal late in the match—the first game winner of her career. Otts dished a perfect set piece to earn her first assist of the season. Five field players contributed 90 minutes of effort, including seniors Dannon Yake and Renee Junna, fifth year Danielle Gonzales, and juniors Ann Spence and Otts. Freshman Trinity Lujan earned the win with four saves, bringing her goals against average to just .49 on the year.

The Yellow Jackets picked up the first shot of the match, but the Skyhawks were the first to place one on target following a shot low-left from Otts in the 17th minute. Nkrumah added another in the 20th minute, followed by exchanged fouls to keep the match scoreless through 29 minutes. Lujan picked up her first save of the match in the 35th minute, and the Skyhawks defense followed it up with a blocked shot in the following minute. Gonzales ended the half with a shot the tailed high-left for a 0-0 score.

Lujan began the second half with a save in the 52nd minute, and the teams went on the play back and forth for the next 13 minutes. The Skyhawks were whistled offside in the 68th minute on a good look, and the Yellow Jackets added pressure in the following minute with a shot on goal. Fort Lewis worked its way to a corner kick in the 73rd minute, and the set piece served as the difference maker with Otts and Coulter combining for a goal and 1-0 lead. Black Hills State applied pressure in the final minutes, but the Skyhawks managed to string together clears to run out the clock.

Fort Lewis (7-4-2, 4-2-1 RMAC) returns to the pitch on Sunday with a 1 PM match against Regis University (9-2-4, 5-1-3 RMAC). The Rangers are coming off a 3-0 win over Western Colorado this evening.
