Nkrumah lifts Skyhawks to crucial road win, sixth straight shutout matches program record

DENVER – The first goal of the season for senior Abigail Nkrumah served as the game winner in a critical road victory for Fort Lewis College (8-4-2, 5-2-1 RMAC) women's soccer team over Regis University (9-2-4, 5-1-3 RMAC), moving the team into fourth place in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings—ahead of the Rangers.

The Skyhawks earned their sixth straight shutout, matching a program record set in 2014. The blank was the 10th of the season for Fort Lewis (5th most in program history) and extended the shutout streak to over 540 minutes for freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan—a mark that ranks fourth in program history.

The teams were even in the shots category with 14 apiece, including 12 in the second half for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks carried a slight edge in shots on goal with eight compared to seven for the Rangers. The teams combined for 16 fouls and the Skyhawks earned a 6-1 advantage in corners.

Lujan matched a career-high with seven saves in the contest, bringing her goals against average to an abysmal mark of .45 which ranks third in the conference. Nkrumah drained the game-winner with her first goal of the season thanks to an assist from senior Anna Tucker. On the field, Dannon Yake, Amber Otts, Ann Spence, Renee Junna, Danielle Gonzales, and Josie Coulter contributed 90 minutes of effort.

Spence began the offensive pressure with a shot that missed high in the third minute, followed by the first shot on goal of the match in the sixth minute by the Rangers. Lujan was credited with her second save of the afternoon in the 15th minute, and Coulter put the Skyhawks' first attempt on target in the 19th minute. The teams played keep away for the remainder of the half with the score resting at zeros at the buzzer. Regis owned a 5-2 advantage in shots while Lujan collected three saves.

Anna Tucker began the second half with a shot that missed high right 26 seconds into play, and the senior added a shot on target two minutes later to continue establishing herself offensively. Tucker continues her dominance in the half, leading to an opportunity for Nkrumah in the 66th minute. Tucker worked into space inside the box, creating two yards of open space near the endline before sending a cross in front of the net. Nkrumah was the intended target and took a one touch shot beyond the keeper's reach for the 1-0 lead. Fort Lewis would put five more shots on target throughout the contest, including a pair from junior Jenna Salazar, and a late save by Lujan closed the door on the gritty road win.

Fort Lewis (8-4-2, 5-2-1 RMAC) plays its final home matches of the regular-season next week with a Friday/Sunday split. The
Skyhawks open play against Colorado Christian (2-6-6, 1-3-5 RMAC) on Friday, October 31 at 7 PM, followed by a 1 PM match on Sunday against MSU Denver (1-7-7, 1-4-4 RMAC).
