No. 7/5 Mountaineers roll Skyhawks at home

Wright hauls in first interception, Delap and Francis first strip-sacks

DURANGO, Colo. – Zachary Gaumont went 58 yards down the sideline for a touchdown, and Kuba Betlinski made a 25-yard field goal to put the Skyhawks into double-digit scoring, but the No. 7/5 nationally ranked Mountaineers showed their poise, cruising to a 49-10 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 1,943 at a blustery Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

Fort Lewis was held to just 210 yards of total offense in its third straight loss, falling to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while Western Colorado University, boasting the league's second-highest offense, cruised to 410 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns to remain unbeaten at 5-0 and 3-0 against RMAC opponents.

Josiah Roy threw for 245 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception on 19 completions in 28 attempts (67.9 percent), striking for three-straight scores to open the game and send the Mountaineers into halftime with a commanding 21-3 lead. On the home side, Jacob Morris connected for 10 completions in 14 attempts (71.4 percent), posting a team-high 93 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Jake Jones was a perfect 3-for-3 from the pocket for 12 yards, and Derek Hester added another 47 yards with two completions in three passing attempts.

While three different Western Colorado receivers hauled in scores, it was DJ Allen, Jr., who highlighted the air raid, hauling in three catches for a game-high 68 yards and two touchdowns. Guamont matched Allen, Jr. with three receptions for just 60 yards. On the ground, it was all Bailey Quinn for the Mountaineers, as the five-foot-nine, speedy tailback found two touchdowns and 77 yards on nine carries. On the home side, Jake Jones and Jamal Johnson were the only pair of Skyhawks to finish with 10+ rushing yards, recording 39 yards and 26 yards on five and seven attempts, respectively.

The Mountaineers' defense stood up to its reputation, holding its opponent to 10 or fewer points for the fourth straight game this fall. WCU found five sacks for 25 yards of loss, 10 tackles in the backfield for 33 yards lost, and held Fort Lewis to 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) on third downs. Donnell Colbert and Logan White both intercepted Skyhawks quarterbacks, but Colbert led the pair with a 14-yard return. Additionally, White recovered the Fort Lewis punt blocked inside the 15-yard line by Joey Fox, earning himself a four-yard scoop-and-score.

Jake Penney returned to his explosive ways, posting a team-high 10 tackles while also picking up his first sack of the 2025 campaign for two yards lost. Aaron Francis and Michael Delap both forced their first career fumbles with a pair of sacks, but both were recovered by Western Colorado. Wesley Wright had quite the career day as well, hauling in a tip-toe interception down the sideline, the first of his career, along with two pass breakups, also the first of his career.
