Skyhawks volleyball faces Griffins and #25 Mavericks in split week

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College (9-4, 3-1 RMAC) volleyball team begins another week of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play on Tuesday against Westminster University before heading home to face No. 25 Colorado Mesa University on Saturday.

Last Time Out
It was a struggle for the Skyhawks in the regional pod matches last week, losing a pair of four set matches to Adams State University and New Mexico Highlands. In the loss to the Grizzlies, the Skyhawks were limited to hitting just .157 for the match compared to a .255 clip for the Cougars. Adams State held the advantage in digs (60-58), blocks (8-4), and aces (11-7).

Senior Ella Butler led the team with 13 kills while hitting .360 and contributing three aces. Freshman Cambria Freymuth also chipped in 13 kills, followed by five players with three kills each. Freshman Ariana Reyna recorded 18 assists, followed by sophomore Addie Garn with 13. Freshman Alyx Daugherty led the way with 18 digs while dishing out six assists.

The loss to the Cowgirls saw the Skyhawks hit .146 for the match compared to a .140 clip for the home team. New Mexico Highlands had the advantage at the service line with nine aces compared to three for the Skyhawks.

Junior Alina Nunez and Freymuth led the team with nine kills each, followed by senior Ella Butler with eight. Senior Ryli Kalahiki has seven kills while hitting .400 for the match. led the team with 18 digs, followed by sophomore Addie Garn (11), Arianna Reyna (10), and Chloe Ruhl (10).

Scouting Westminster University
The Griffins are 9-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play and need just two more wins to match their total from the 2024 season. Westminster has played two matches at home, both of which resulted in losses (UCCS, 3-0 and MSU Denver, 3-1). The team split its regional pod weekend with a 3-1 loss to No. 25 Colorado Mesa and a sweep of Western Colorado.

Westminster is hitting .209 this season while holding its opponents to a .179 efficiency. The Griffins average 16.5 digs per set and 2.2 blocks per set. Sadie Parrish leads the offense by averaging 2.63 kills per set, followed by Breegan Huntsman at 2.48 per set. The middle blocker duo of Mailei Myers and Hailey Killett averages a combined four kills per set while hitting .350.

Setter Leila Cornejo (4.95) and Atley Mitchell (4.54) combine for nearly 10 assists per set. Ava Livolsi holds down the defense with 4.26 digs per set and 296 receptions. Huntsman is targeted most frequently on serve receive with 315 chances and just 11 errors (.965). Myers leads defense at the net with 1.05 blocks per set.

The Skyhawks lead the all-time series 8-7 but dropped last season's meeting in three sets. The loss in Salt Lake City saw Fort Lewis hit just .079 with 24 attacking errors. Butler led the team with seven kills while Pomroy emerged with 15 digs.

Scouting No. 25 Colorado Mesa
The Mavericks are 9-4 this season with a 3-1 record in conference play. The team checks in at No. 25 in the latest AVCA National Poll and has ascended to as high at No. 18 this season. Last week, Mesa earned wins over Western Colorado (3-0) and Westminster (3-1). The Mavericks have faced six nationally ranked programs this season with a 2-4 record in those contests.

Mesa is hitting .259 this season to lead the conference and hold the opposition to an RMAC-best .157 efficiency. The Mavericks average 1.7 aces, 14.9 digs, and 2.1 blocks per set. Sadie Scoville leads the team by averaging 2.84 kills per set, followed by three additional players averaging over two per set. Mesa runs a two-setter offense guided by Ashlyn Tafoya and Addie Swanson who both put up over five assists per set.

Allison Waller leads the defense with 3.77 digs per set, followed by Scoville at 2.46 per set. Scoville is the primary target on serve receive with 26 errors in 358 chances (.927). Macy Wood and Alrashed lead the team at the net, each averaging over one block per set.

Fort Lewis has lost the last eight meetings between the teams with seven of the losses coming in straight sets. The Skyhawks fell in Grand Junction last season after hitting .099 compared to a .347 mark for the Mavericks.

What's at Stake?
Fort Lewis is one win away from matching its win total from the 2024 season (10). With 12 matches left to play, the Skyhawks look to capitalize on an excellent start and finish strong heading into postseason opportunities. Additionally, the Skyhawks have earned five, three-set wins through 11 matches. The team totaled just three sweeps in 26 games last season, four sweeps in 2023, and three in 2022. Fort Lewis has not amassed five sweeps since the 2017 season.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis has improved across most major statistical categories this season, led by digs per set where the team is up over four digs to average 18.2 per set this year—ranking 13th in NCAA DII. Additionally, the Skyhawks are hitting .200 (.152 in 2024) while averaging 1.7 aces (1.3 in 2024).

Senior middle blocker Ella Butler is off to a fantastic start by averaging 2.47 kills per set on a .346 efficiency—a mark that ranks 5th in the RMAC. Freshman Cambria Freymuth has added valuable offensive and defensive abilities as a six rotation outside hitter, averaging 2.82 kills (14th-RMAC) and 2.80 digs per set.

For the first time in three seasons, the Skyhawks are running a 6-2 offense with freshman Arianna Reyna and sophomore Addie Garn distributing the ball. Reyna averages 5.67 assists per set while Garn averages 3.73 per set and leads the team in total aces (17). Sophomore Emery Pomroy ranks third in the RMAC with 4.44 digs per set, followed by freshman Alyx Daugherty at 3.94 digs per set (8th-RMAC).

Fort Lewis (9-4, 3-1 RMAC) remains home for a Tuesday/Friday split next week. First, the Skyhawks welcome Western Colorado University for a 6:00 PM match on Tuesday, followed by a 6:00 PM match on Friday against Colorado School of Mines.
