Skyhawks post first RMAC win with 44-24 victory over Grizzlies

Fort Lewis eclipses 500 yards of offense for the first time since 2018

DURANGO, Colo. – The Clash for the Pass trophy will reside in Durango for another year, as Fort Lewis utilized its best all-around offensive performance in eight years to win its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the campaign with a 44-24 victory over Adams State University in front of a crowd of 2,164 at home on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

The Skyhawks (2-7, 1-6 RMAC) ran up 563 yards of total offense, it's most since 2018, powered by a dominant running game that racked up 316 yards and six touchdowns, including a pair of two-touchdown performances from KB Broadus and Nicholas Minacapelli, capture its second-straight victory in the Skyhawks and Grizzlies revitalized Clash for the Pass rivalry series, previously known as the Musket Game Series before its hiatus in 2021. Adams State still leads the series 37-19-1 all-time.

Broadus notched his third two-touchdown effort of the season while Minacapelli found the end zone for the first two times in his career to help power Fort Lewis to its first 300+ yard rushing performance since 2016. Broadus led all players with 77 yards on 12 carries, with Jamal Johnson and Olando Guevara adding a pair of 24-yard and 33-yard touchdowns as well.

Adams State (0-9, 0-7 RMAC) moved the ball for an efficient 307 yards with a balanced approach of 158 yards through the air and 149 yards on the ground. Graduate quarterback Gavin Herberg threw for 158 yards on 15 completions in 30 attempts (50 percent) while taking two sacks and tossing a fourth-quarter interception to Tailan King for King's second pick of the season. Herberg connected with Devin Dawkins for a seven-yard touchdown late in the game after Rasheed Rice and Brycen Mhlanga rushed a pair of one-yard touchdowns.

Quinton Pacheco drilled a 41-yard field goal in the opening quarter of action to put the Grizzlies up by two possessions, but after Johnson's 24-yard touchdown, Charles Parke knocked in a 35-yarder of his own in the second quarter to extend the Skyhawks' lead by two scores before never looking back. Jacob Morris paced the offense from the pocket with a career-high 242 yards on 12 completions in 18 attempts (66.7 percent) while taking just one sack. Zachary Gaumont led all Skyhawks receivers with 85 yards on two catches, while Dawkins led all players with 107 yards and a touchdown on seven catches.

Jake Penney showed no signs of slowing down defensively, making another 12 tackles across the afternoon to record his 11th-consecutive game with 10+ tackles. Penney extended his NCAA Division II lead to 121 total tackles and added one of two sacks for the Skyhawks with a four-yard stop. Kingston Grigsby added his first career sack with a six-yard tackle.
