Women's basketball remains unbeaten with 78-67 win over St. Edward's

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team proved that it didn't need to rely on three-point shooting to win games, playing stingy defense that forced 28 turnovers en route to a 78-67 win over St. Edward's University on Tuesday afternoon.

The home opening win for the Skyhawks improved the team to 3-0 this season, the best start for the program since the 2017-18 season.

Fort Lewis shot 33.7 percent from the field in the contest compared to a 43.5 percent clip for St. Edward's but earned an advantage with 28 points off of turnovers. The Hilltoppers spent a lot of time at the free throw line, going 22-of-24 compared to an 18-of-26 mark for the Skyhawks.

Once again, Fort Lewis had four players in double figures. Sophomore Katie Lamb led the team with 18 points to go along with six steals and four rebounds. Junior Malia Ulery followed with 13 points, and freshman Alemaualii Fonoti poured in 12 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez added 11 points in the win.

St. Edward's owned a 16-15 lead after the first quarter despite trailing 13-8 with 3:20 to go. The Hilltoppers went on a run late in the quarter and eventually grabbed the advantage with 52 seconds remaining following a made free throw.

Palacio Gámez gave Fort Lewis the lead on the first possession of the second quarter, but St. Edward's reclaimed the advantage through three minutes of play. Lamb converted an offensive rebound to a jumper for a 24-23 lead, and the teams traded the lead over the next four minutes. Late turnovers and a last second three pointer by Lamb made it a 35-34 Fort Lewis lead at halftime.

The third quarter is where the Skyhawks found breathing room, opening with a layup from junior Natalie Guanella for three-point lead. A six-point run with a pair of layups by freshman Josie Davis made it 45-40 with 5:23 to go, and the quarter ended with the largest lead of the game following five points from Palacio Gámez.

Back-to-back turnovers resulted in four points for the Skyhawks to see a 62-47 lead with under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Both teams enjoyed time at the charity stripe to move the score to 70-56 with 3:38 to go, and late scoring ended the game in a 78-67 final.

Fort Lewis (3-0) will hit the road for another regional matchup against Angelo State University on Saturday, November 22 at 2:00 PM in San Angelo, Texas.
