Women's soccer routs MSU Denver 3-0, earns eighth-straight shutout

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's soccer closed out the home portion of their schedule in style with its eight-straight shutout, a 3-0 win over MSU Denver, to extend its shutout streak to over 720 minutes and improve to 10-4-2 overall and 7-2-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play—the first double-digit win season for the program since 2015.

Fort Lewis did not allow a goal at home throughout the regular season, outscoring its opponents 24-0 and racking up a total of 12 shutouts throughout the season with one match left on the schedule.

The Skyhawks outshot the Roadrunners 15-7 in the match and held a 4-1 advantage in shots on target. Fort Lewis played to eight corner kicks compared to three for MSU Denver, and the teams were whistled for 21 fouls.

Junior Amber Otts contributed the game-winning goal, her first of the season, while playing 86 minutes. Senior Anna Tucker scored her sixth goal of the season in the win, and senior Abigail Nkrumah added the team's third goal in the contest. Junior Jenna Salazar was credited for two assists in the win, giving her three helpers in the last two matches. Freshman Trinity Lujan trimmed her goals against average to .39 on the season with the shutout.

The match opened with Fort Lewis holding possession despite the first shot on goal of the match going to MSU Denver. Fifth year Danielle Gonzales put a quality shot up in the 19th minute to show offense for the Skyhawks, and Otts broke through in the 25th minute. The junior collected a pass near midfield and took the ball forward, beating her defender and firing off a shot from distance that tucked under the bar for a 1-0 lead.

MSU Denver owned the ball early in the second half, forcing the defensive unit of the Skyhawks to work. Senior Josie Coulter turned the momentum in the 67th minute with a quality shot that rattled off the cross bar, followed by a shot from Tucker that missed high. Fort Lewis added its second goal of the match in 78th after Salazar flicked a header forward to Tucker. Tucker dribbled past two defenders and eventually beat the opposing keeper right for the open shot and a 2-0 lead.

Salazar followed with a pair of shots that missed high, and Nkrumah added the third goal of the match in the 81st minute to put away the win. Again, Salazar was in the middle of the play, sending a pass to the left corner of the Skyhawks' offensive third where Nkrumah was charging toward. Nkrumah met the ball and crashed into the box where she curled a shot high-right with her left foot for a 3-0 lead. The Roadrunners managed one more shot which was blocked by the Fort Lewis defense to end the match in a 3-0 final.

Fort Lewis continues to rank fourth in the conference heading into the final match of the regular season on Wednesday. The Skyhawks take on Western Colorado University (2-12-4, 2-5-4 RMAC) in Gunnison for a 3 PM kickoff.
