Skyhawks draw in RMAC finale, host RMAC Tournament Quarterfinal on Sunday

GUNNISON, Colo. – Despite owning over 65 percent of possession and outshooting Western Colorado University (2-12-5, 2-5-5 RMAC) 31-8, the (RV) Fort Lewis College (10-4-3, 7-2-2) women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw to close out Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play on Wednesday.

Fort Lewis has secured a home playoff match and the No. 4-seed in the RMAC Tournament. The Skyhawks will play on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against the No. 5-seed. Regis University currently holds the fifth spot in the standings, but the bracket will be confirmed at the conclusion of today's matches.

As previously stated, Fort Lewis owned a 31-8 advantage in shots which included a 10-3 lead in shots on goal. The Skyhawks played to nine corners compared to two for the Mountaineers. The teams played a clean match with just seven combined fouls.

Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan and her defensive counterparts earned the team's 13 shutout of the season, cutting the team's goals against average to just .35. Fifth year Danielle Gonzales and senior Renee Junna held down defensive duties for all 90 minutes of today's match.

Senior Abigail Nkrumah led the team with five shots, followed by senior Anna Tucker and junior Jenna Salazar with four each. Redshirt freshman Kiana Jamerson added a team-best two shots on goal. Seven additional players were credited with shots in the contest.

Fort Lewis had back-to-back quality looks in the seventh minute, first with Nkrumah sending a ball ahead to Spence who missed high. Nkrumah followed with a shot of her own, beating the keeper but missing wide right to hold the score. The Mountaineers countered in the 11th minute with a ball that appeared to be well-positioned to get a shot off. Coulter turned it into a foot race and won the ball before clearing it ahead to the midfield. Gonzales went on to block a shot just outside of the box in the 17th minute to continue shutout play.

Jamerson checked in midway through the half and immediately went to work with a long-range shot on goal and a solid attempt on a cross in front of the keeper. Tapia, another mid-half substitute, fired off a shot from 30 yards out and rattled it off the post to continue the scoreless affair. Lujan was tasked with her first save of the match off a deep free kick in the 36th minute, perfectly timing her leap to corral the ball near the crossbar. The freshman made another key read with two minutes remaining when she abandoned her position to meet a charging Western Colorado player before a shot could be taken.

The second half began with a narrow miss from Salazar in the 49th minute. The junior met a crossing pass from Rachel Peebles but was knocked down by the Western Colorado keeper who had sprinted ahead to intercept the opportunity. Fort Lewis continued to send shots toward the goal, many missing high before an on-target shot by Gonzales was sent on target from near the midfield mark in the 67th minute.

Lujan earned her next save in the 69th minute after an explosive move to her left put a hand on the ball to hold the match at zeros. Nkrumah narrowly missed another chance in the 76th minute, followed by another save from Lujan the following minute. The Skyhawks continued to pepper the opposing keeper with shots, giving her double digit saves for the match heading into the final minutes. The Mountaineers had the final opportunity with a free kick outside of the box. The initial shot was blocked by a wall of Skyhawks, but the rebound connected for a shot that missed high.
