Thanksgiving Classic awaits undefeated Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team brings its 4-0 record to Grand Junction this week for the Maverick Thanksgiving Classic, facing Sul Ross State and Simon Fraser University. The Skyhawks will face both teams for the first time in program history.

Last Time Out
It was another two-win week for Fort Lewis, starting with a 78-67 win over St. Edward's University on Tuesday at home. Fort Lewis shot 33.7 percent from the field in the contest compared to a 43.5 percent clip for St. Edward's but earned an advantage with 28 points off of turnovers. The Hilltoppers spent a lot of time at the free throw line, going 22-of-24 compared to an 18-of-26 mark for the Skyhawks.

Saturday featured a comeback win on the road for the blue and gold after gritting out a 62-61 result over Angelo State University. Fort Lewis outscored Angelo State 26-17 in the fourth quarter and grabbed the lead with just seven seconds to go off a three-pointer from Katie Lamb to secure the victory.

Lamb Named RMAC Offensive Player of the Week
After leading Fort Lewis to wins last week, sophomore Katie Lamb was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week—the first player to earn a player of the week honor since the 2022-23 season.

The sophomore guard enjoyed a season-high 18 points to begin the week, shooting 43.8 percent from the field in a home win over St. Edward's. Lamb added six steals and four rebounds in the win. She followed it up on Saturday with 14 points at a 41.7 percent clip against Angelo State. The highlight came with just seven seconds remaining when Lamb knocked down a three-pointer to give Fort Lewis its first lead at 62-61, the score that would go final just seconds later.

 Scouting Sul Ross State
The Lobos sit a 1-1 with a win over Northern New Mexico (65-58) and loss to Schreiner University (72-59). The team recently transitioned to NCAA DII, putting up a 2-23 record in their first season at the Division II level last year.

Sul Ross is currently averaging 62 points per game while slashing .310/.227/.756. The Lobos have the advantage in rebounding with 44.5 per game compared to 37.5 for their opponents. Ball handling has been an area of promise as well with the team averaging 15 steals and 19 turnovers compared to 22 turnover and nine steals for the opposition.

Sophiya Bustillos leads the team by averaging 14.5 points per game, followed by Victoria Aguayo with 12.5 per game. Daisy Fernandez paces the squad with 6.5 rebounds per game, followed by three players with at least six. Aguaya is responsible for 4.5 steals per game.

Scouting Simon Fraser University
The Red Leafs are 3-4 this season after wins over Adans State (49-42) and Jamestown (55-45) last week. The team was 14-13 last season with a 7-11 record in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Simon Fraser has played in low scoring contests this season, averaging 53 points per game compared to 62.7 for its opponents. The team slashes .345/.264/.593 with 4.7 threes per game. Additionally, the Red Leafs average 35.6 rebounds, 20.4 turnovers, 10.1 assists, and 9.3 steals per game.

Leading the way is Rachel Loukes with 17 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, followed by Bree Neufeld at eight points and five rebounds per game. Three players are putting up at least four rebounds per game. Haley de Walle and Loukes combine for 4.5 assists per game.

The Skyhawks have put up big numbers through four games and thus are ranked highly in numerous statistical categories around the conference. Below is a list of where Fort Lewis sits through three games.
