Comeback falls short against (RV) Rams

Skyhawks force season-high 20 turnovers

CANYON, Texas – For the first time this year Fort Lewis (2-3) found itself on the losing end of its third one-possession game of the season on Friday night down at the First United Bank Center as Angelo State University (7-1) capitalized on turnovers and free trips to the charity stripe to hold off the Skyhawks down the stretch in the fourth game of the West Texas Thanksgiving Classic.

Jesaiah McWright paved the path for the Rams, scoring a game-high 21 points on a 4-of-9 night from the field while most notably converting on 13 of 14 free throw attempts to lead Angelo State to a combined 24-of-28 (85.7 percent) night at the free throw line. Despite Fort Lewis forcing 43 free throw attempts of its own, the Skyhawks converted just 31 times (72.1 percent). Ja'Queze Kirby and Jaqai Murray added 18 points and 15 points, respectively, to round out the Rams in double-figures.

Fort Lewis' high-pressure style forced 20 turnovers out of Angelo State for 20 points off turnovers. The Rams, on the other hand, turned over Fort Lewis 23 times for 28 points off turnovers. Both teams knocked down six three-pointers each, and Angelo State held the edge from the field 50 percent (24-58) to 46.5 percent (20-43). While both sides brought down an equal 29 rebounds, it was the Rams who outscored the Skyhawks by ten with 36 points in the paint.

Donald Bangham, Jr. led the Skyhawks in scoring, posting his fourth-straight game of 10 or more points with a season-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. Stewart Erhart, who missed a pair of games early on, found his groove to match Jaxon Smith with 15 points each, while Chuol Deng supplied another 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Yorgio Golesis bolstered the offense with seven points and four of the team's eight total assists while also grabbing a team-high three steals.
