COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fort Lewis men's basketball's Stewart Erhart has been tabbed as the Week 5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It's the first such honor for any Skyhawk this season as well as the third of Erhart's career.

A graduate of West Valley High School and a native of Tanana, Alaska, Erhart has captured his third RMAC weekly honor in his second season and 38th career game. After settling into a consistent starting role with the Skyhawks last season, Erhart has erupted this fall, averaging 17 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.43 steals, and 2.7 assists in his seven games this season. He's shooting 49.4 percent (39-79) from the field, 45 percent (9-20) from the three-point line, and 78 percent (32-41) at the free throw line.

Last Tuesday, Erhart's defensive pressure provided the much-needed spark for Fort Lewis, leading the charge in a 15-point come-from-behind victory, 88-80, over New Mexico Highlands University (2-9, 2-2 RMAC). He finished second on the roster in scoring, putting up 19 points on 6-for-16 shooting, including a 3-of-7 mark from deep and a perfect 4-for-4 clip at the charity stripe, while tying his career-high with seven steals–which also tied for the fifth-most in a game in program history–grabbing four rebounds, blocking two shots, and handing out two assists. Erhart accounted for seven of the team's 10 total steals among 22 turnovers forced, resulting in a season-high 28 points off turnovers for the Skyhawks.

Facing a gutsy Adams State University (6-5, 1-3 RMAC) on Saturday, Erhart maintained his defensive pressure while upping his offensive output to lead four Skyhawks in double figures with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting, with another dangerous 3-for-5 mark from deep. He also grabbed six of Fort Lewis' 15 total steals, resulting in 26 turnovers forced for 26 points off turnovers. In addition, he was nearly perfect in handling the ball up and down the floor, hauling in five rebounds and making five assists while committing a single turnover and no fouls in 31 minutes.

With Erhart at the helm, Fort Lewis posted another 2-0 week to stand alongside No. 19-ranked Black Hills State University (8-1, 4-0 RMAC) as the only two unbeaten teams in conference play. Through his seven games, Erhart ranks among the conference's best, including first in steals per game (3.43), which also ranks sixth in all of Division II, seventh in scoring (17.0 ppg), and 22nd in free throw percentage (78 percent). As a unit, Fort Lewis is forcing 23.3 turnovers per game for a +6.0 margin and grabbing 12.67 steals per game against conference opponents.

The Skyhawks are back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday with their toughest test of the season at the River City Holiday Classic down in San Antonio, Texas. Fort Lewis will face No. 14-ranked St. Edward's University (11-1, 2-1 LSC) at 10 a.m. on Dec. 16, followed by No. 7-ranked St. Mary's University (7-1, 2-1 LSC) at 10 a.m. on Dec. 17. Fans can catch both games live pay-per-view on the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Network.
