DII Christmas Tournament awaits women's basketball this week

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's basketball jumps back into nonconference play this week at the DII Christmas Tournament, hosted by UT Tyler, where they will face Maryville University and UT Tyler.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis split its conference home opener last week with a win over New Mexico Highlands and loss to Adams State University. In the win over the Cowgirls, Fort Lewis used a 25-point fourth quarter to capture a 74-71 final. Five players reached double figures for Fort Lewis, led by freshman Josie Davis' career-high 17 points. Sophomore Katie Lamb followed with 15 points while junior Natalie Guanella came away with 12 after a 6-of-7 mark from the field. The duo of freshman Alemaualii Fonoti and Claudia Palacio Gámez added 11 points each. Davis led the team with six rebounds while Palacio Gámez dished out six assists.

The loss to Adams State featured a matchup against the Skyhawks' toughest opponent this season. The Skyhawks found themselves down by as many as 33 points in the second quarter, rallied in the third quarter, but ultimately fell in a 78-50 loss. Defensively, the Skyhawks were led by freshman Josie Davis with 11 rebounds and four steals—both team-highs. Freshman Savanna Dotray led the team with 11 points, followed by freshman Alemaualii Fonoti with eight.

Scouting Maryville University
The Saints sit at 8-2 on the year with a 3-1 record in GLVC play. Maryville was 16-15 last season after advancing to the championship game in the GLVC Tournament. This season, the Saints are outscoring their opponents +13.3 while slashing .394/.326/.790. They own a +5.5 turnover margin while forcing 19.8 turnovers per game from the opposition.

The leading scorer is Lindsey Schadewalt at 15.5 points per game. Schadewalt is effective at all levels, including from three where she shoots 50 percent. From there, four players average at least six points per game. Olivia Hahn and Alicia Burgos paced the squad with 4.7 and 4.5 rebounds per game, respectively.

Scouting UT Tyler
The Patriots are 6-4 this season with a 3-0 record on their home floor. They are coming off a season that ended in a 25-5 record in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. UT Tyler is outscoring its opponents +10.2 while slashing .381/.309/.646. The Patriots force 23.6 turnovers per game while putting up 14.4 steals per game.

Individually, Hayley Cumming leads the way by averaging 12.8 points per game, followed by Polina Latysheva at 10 points per game. Mileina Sablinskaite puts up 6.3 rebounds per game, followed by Leila Davis with five per game.
