Skyhawks down Patriots in Tyler, go unbeaten at DII Christmas Tournament

TYLER, Texas – True freshman Josie Davis went off for a career-best 18-point, 10-rebound double-double, and the Skyhawks' defense clamped down to outrebound the Patriots by a +19 margin, powering the Fort Lewis women's basketball team to a 60-53 win over the University of Texas at Tyler to cap an undefeated trip to the Lone Star State for the DII Christmas Tournament.

Second-year head coach Lauren Zuniga's squad held the Patriots to 37.5 percent (21-56) shooting and just one made three-pointer in 21 attempts (4.8 percent), to rise to 9-3 overall and close out non-conference play with a 7-1 record, including a 6-0 record against in-region opponents, to mark a strong turnaround from last season's 3-5 non-conference record. UT Tyler falls to an even 6-6 overall.

Fort Lewis took control early, going up 4-0 before Savanna Dotray later buried a three-pointer in the final second of the opening quarter to put the Skyhawks ahead, 17-6.  The Skyhawks went on to maintain the lead for the final 37 minutes of the contest, pulling ahead by as many as 20 points on two occasions, and shooting 39.7 percent (23-58) for the game, including a dominant 71.4 percent (5-7) in the fourth quarter alone to seal the win.

Davis, a five-foot-eight guard out of Owyhee High School in Meridian, Idaho, was 7-of-15 from the floor, grabbed six offensive rebounds, and matched UT Tyler's Leila Davis for a game-high four steals. Alemaualii Fonoti was the only other Skyhawk in double figures, going 7-for-10 from the floor for 15 points and six rebounds. Ashten Martinez finished just behind Davis with a season-high nine rebounds while also supplying four points and a blocked shot.

Leila Davis, who finished just shy of a double-double, led two Patriots in double figures with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting alongside nine rebounds, four steals, two assists, and one block. Hayley Cumming supplied another 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting, while nine of the 11 Patriots to check in scored at least one point. UT Tyler made just one three-pointer for the first time since Nov. 5, 2023.
