Women's basketball opens RMAC schedule at MSU Denver and Regis

DURANGO, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule awaits the Skyhawks women's basketball team, with conference openers this week at MSU Denver and Regis University.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis went 1-1 last week at the Mavericks Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction, first picking up an 89-67 win over Sul Ross State. Fort Lewis shot 47 percent from the field (31-of-66) and dropped in 22 free throws. Sul Ross State came away with 21 free throws while shooting 34.4 percent. The Skyhawks earned a season-high 51 rebounds to go along with 19 assists and 13 steals.

Four players contributed double-digit points, led by junior Makaya Porter with 19 points to go along with five blocks. Sophomore Katie Lamb followed with 17 points, and junior Natalie Guanella added 15. Freshman Alemaualii Fonoti had 10 points in 10 minutes of play. Freshman Josie Davis earned a career-high with 10 rebounds to go along with five assists.

On Saturday, the Skyhawks dropped their first game of the season in a 74-67 final score against Simon Fraser University. The Skyhawks shot 31.2 percent from the field and just 8.7 percent from three in the loss. Fort Lewis benefited from 50 rebounds and forced 16 turnovers from the Red Leafs.

Freshman Alemaualii Fonoti contributed a season-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore Katie Lamb added 14 points, and sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez put up 10. Palacio Gámez added seven rebounds and six assists in the game.

Scouting MSU Denver
The Roadrunners are 1-5 this season after picking up a 91-74 win over Western New Mexico last week. MSU Denver is coming off a 6-22 season in 2024-25, which saw the team go 5-15 in conference play.

MSU Denver is averaging 66.3 points per game while allowing 78.8 points per game. The team is slashing .399/.291/.762 to go along with 29.3 rebounds per game. The duo of Jadyn Watts and Mikylah Espinosa leads the team in scoring by averaging 12.5 and 12.2 points per game, respectively.

Watts is the leading rebounder at 4.5 per game, followed by Brianna Sealy at 4.0 per game. Espinosa paces the squad with 20 assists and 14 steals while committing 25 turnovers. The Roadrunners have four players over six feet tall on the roster, headlined by Keira Mitchell and Bri Bowden at 6-3. There are six transfers on the team that are under the direction of first-year head coach Lynn Kennedy.
 
Scouting Regis University
The Rangers are also under new leadership this season, with head coach Jason Kohler taking the reins following a stint as assistant coach. Regis sits at 0-3 this season with losses to Eastern New Mexico, Angelo State, and Rogers State. Regis was 13-15 last season with an 11-9 record in conference play.

Regis has yet to surpass 51 points in a game this season, averaging 50.3 points per game compared to 69.7 from the opposition. The Rangers slash .308/.230/.561 while outrebounding their opponents 42.3/40.0. Turnovers are an area of concern for Regis, with 21.3 per game leading to 19 points for opposing teams.

A familiar name is leading the Rangers in scoring with former Fort Lewis player Kate Gallery, averaging 16.5 points per game. Gallery is also leading the conference in minutes per game at 38. Caitie Turnbow follows with 13 points per game. Rebounding is led by Jessica Bollwahn, who pulls down 10.7 per game.

The Skyhawks have put up big numbers through six games and thus are ranked highly in numerous statistical categories around the conference. Below is a list of where Fort Lewis sits through three games.

Fort Lewis plays at home next week with a Tuesday/Saturday split. The Skyhawks welcome New Mexico Highlands for a 5:30 PM tipoff on Tuesday, followed by a 1 PM tip versus Adams State University on Saturday.
