Skyhawks men to host New Mexico Highlands, Adams State for RMAC home openers

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis men's basketball (3-4, 2-0 RMAC) will look to improve on its 2-0 start to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at home this week with a pair of games against New Mexico Highlands University (1-8, 1-1 RMAC) on Tuesday night and Adams State University (6-3, 1-1 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon.
 
Skyhawks School Spirit and Durango Santa
Tuesday night has been tabbed the Skyhawks School Spirit Game presented by Nunn Construction. Fans are encouraged to show up and show out in their favorite blue and gold apparel to back the Skyhawks in their first home conference game of the year. Santa will attend Saturday's game, presented by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Fort Lewis College Foundation, and available for fans to chat and take photographs with. Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance through HomeTown Ticketing.
 
Two for One
The Skyhawks jumped out to an early 2-0 record in conference action last weekend after besting Metropolitan State University of Denver (1-7, 0-2 RMAC), 81-76, inside Denver University's Hamilton Gymnasium, before Saturday's bout against Regis University (1-5, 0-2 RMAC) was declared a no contest. While the game did not count for Fort Lewis' overall record, it did count as a conference win. Four other teams have jumped out to 2-0 in RMAC play, including No. 21-ranked Black Hills State University (7-1, 2-0 RMAC), University of Colorado Colorado Springs (5-3, 2-0), Western Colorado University (4-4, 2-0 RMAC), and Colorado School of Mines (4-6, 2-0 RMAC).
 
Last Time Out
Three Skyhawks finished in double figures against the Roadrunners last week, including Chuol Deng with a game-high 19 points, Stewart Erhart with 18 points, and Jaxon Smith with 13 points. Most notably, Fort Lewis forced 22 turnovers in the contest for a season-high 24 points off turnovers. Deng and Erhart combined for 10 of the team's 13 total steals, with Deng recording a career-high seven steals, which also tied the 5th-most in a game in program history. Deng also brought down eight rebounds, while Erhart and Massal Diouf hauled in six rebounds each. The Skyhawks also drew 23 personal fouls, resulting in 31 made free throws in 38 trips (81.6 percent) to the line.

Cowboys Wrangle in First Win
New Mexico Highlands enters the week with a 1-8 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play. The Cowboys earned their first win of the season last Thursday, routing Regis 72-57 behind double-digit scoring efforts from three players. On Saturday, New Mexico Highlands took defending RMAC Champions Colorado School of Mines down to the wire, falling 81-80 in Golden, Colo. Senior guard Marcus Pierce led the Cowboys in both outings, putting up 16 points in each contest while also racking up eight assists, six rebounds, and a pair of steals. Fort Lewis leads New Mexico Highlands 65-43 all-time, but the Cowboys own the most recent win, 84-77, down in Las Vegas, N.M., last season.

Grizzlies on the Prowl
Adams State is off to one of its best starts in recent years, boasting a 6-3 overall record and a 1-1 start to conference play, following a 5-2 start in non-conference action. The Grizzlies, similar fashion to the Skyhawks, were defeated by Angelo State University (8-3, 0-2 LSC), 68-61, and were also defeated by Dallas Baptist University (6-4, 2-0 LSC), 113-60. Last season, DBU made an appearance in the NCAA DII Elite Eight. Colorado School of Mines handed the Grizzlies a 97-87 loss in the conference opener before Adams State bounced back with a dominant 87-59 win at MSU Denver. The Skyhawks have had the Grizzlies' number in recent years, winning seven-straight games and eight of the last ten matchups to lead ASU 78-57 all-time.

Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis will cap its non-conference schedule in San Antonio, Texas, next week at the Northside ISD Sports Gymnasium for the River City Holiday Classic. The Skyhawks will take on No. 11-ranked St. Edward's University (10-1, 1-1 LSC) at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, followed by No. 9-ranked St. Mary's University (7-0, 2-0 LSC) at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
