Fort Lewis women's basketball welcomes Cowgirls and Grizzlies for RMAC contests

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's basketball brings its 6-2 record back to Whalen Gymnasium this week with a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games against New Mexico Highlands and Adams State University.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis began its RMAC season with a road split against MSU Denver and Regis University. On Thursday, the Skyhawks found themselves in foul trouble against the Roadrunners with 32 fouls whistled and 37 free throws shot for the home team. In the 95-81 loss, Sophomore Katie Lamb led the team with 18 points and six rebounds. Freshman Savanna Dotray followed with 14 points and five rebounds, while freshman Alemaualii Fonoti added 13 points. Junior Natalie Guanella added five steals and three assists, both team-highs.

Saturday featured a tightly contested game against the Rangers, which ended in a 67-64 win for the Skyhawks. Guanella drained a three-pointer to take a late lead, and Lamb added a pair of free throws to seal the win. Junior Makaya Porter led the team with 17 points, followed by sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez and freshman Savanna Dotray with 11 each. Fort Lewis recorded 23 steals, with eight players recording at least one. Palacio Gámez and freshman Antia Gonzáles Docampo and Josie Davis each came away with four to lead the way.

Inside the Numbers
Three players are averaging double-digit points through eight games, led by sophomore Katie Lamb at 13.5 per game. Lamb has scored 12 or more points in all but two games this season. Junior Makaya Porter follows with 12.6 points per game while leading the team in field goal percentage at 46.2. Freshman Alemaualii Fonoti puts up 10.5 points per game while leading the team at 5.1 rebounds per game.

Fort Lewis has been scrappy defensively and has four players averaging over two steals per game. Porter is a big part of that stout defensive unit with 2.3 steals and 1.5 blocks per game (1st-RMAC). Palacio Gámez leads all players with three assists per game for a squad that is averaging 14.4 assists per game.

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
The Cowgirls sit 4-3 on the year and 1-1 in conference play following a win over Regis (72-42) and a loss to Colorado School of Mines (68-62) last week. NMHU is coming off a 14-13 season in 2024-25, advancing to the first round of the RMAC Tournament.

This season, NMHU is averaging 74.3 points per game while slashing .449/.301/.713. The team's field goal percentage ranks second in the conference, while the points per game mark sits second behind For Lewis. The Cowgirls are outplaying the opposition in rebounds per game (36.4), assists per game (13.3), and steals per game (12.4).

Reigning RMAC Freshman of the Year, Kapiolani Anitielu, is leading the team by averaging 13.1 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She is backed up by her sister, Kamalani Anitielu, at 10.4 points per game. Six players have double-digit assists through seven games, led by Aspen Salazar with 15 total.

Fort Lewis is 26-5 all-time against NMHU despite losing both games last season. The Skyhawks are 1-4 in their last five games against the Cowgirls but hold a 14-2 record when playing at home.

Scouting Adams State
The Grizzlies hold a 7-3 overall record and a 2-0 mark in conference play after wins over Mines (75-68) and MSU Denver (77-67) last week. Adams State was 19-12 last season with a 14-6 record in the RMAC, losing in the first round of both the RMAC and NCAA Tournaments.

As a team, the Grizzlies are averaging 64.4 points per game while slashing .395/.268/.708. They come away with 34.4 rebounds per game while forcing nearly 20 turnovers by the opposition.

Leading the way offensively is Kiiyani Anitielu, an All-Conference and All-Region performer, at 16.1 points per game. Taejhuan Hill follows at 14.6 points per game while shooting 56.6 percent from the field, and Ashiian Hunter adds 10.2 points per game. Hill's defense leads the way at 7.5 rebounds per game, and Elaina Watson is leading the conference with three steals per game.

Fort Lewis is 20-13 all-time against Adams State with eight-straight losses to the Grizzlies. The Skyhawks are 12-5 at home against the Grizzlies heading into Saturday's matchup.

Fort Lewis will play a pair of nonconference games next week in Tyler, Texas. The Skyhawks open play on Wednesday at 11:00 AM versus Maryville University before facing UT Tyler on Thursday at 1:00 PM.
