Women's hoops kicks off home stretch against #24/RV Colorado Mesa and Western Colorado

DURANGO, Colo. – Women's basketball kicks off a four-game home stand this week with a pair of tough matchups against the number one and two teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, #24/RV Colorado Mesa University and Western Colorado University.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks struggled last week with their home and away split against Adams State University and New Mexico Highlands. On Tuesday at home, Fort Lewis dropped a 79-49 contest to the Grizzlies. Fort Lewis headed to Las Vegas and fell to the Cowgirls, 77-64.

The Skyhawks struggled shooting against the Grizzlies and ended the game with a 30.3 percent (20-of-66) clip from the field. The Grizzlies shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the field and benefited from 12 made three-pointers. The visitors doubled up the Skyhawks from the stripe with 14 chances. The teams were even with 43 rebounds apiece

In the loss to the Cowgirls, Skyhawks shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field compared to a 53.6 percent (30-of-56) clip for the home team. NMHU poured in 22 points off of turnovers and 38 points from the bench. The teams were even with 36 rebounds apiece and combined for 42 turnovers.

Inside the Numbers
After a tough week, Fort Lewis has dropped in the team statistical rankings among conference opponents. The Skyhawks ranked 11th in points per game (63.3) while sitting 8th in points allowed per game (67.1). They are 5th in field goal percentage (.399) and 7th in three-point field goal percentage (.298). Rebounding remains an area to key in on, and Fort Lewis continues to rank 13th (34.0) in boards per game. They are 14th in turnovers per game (17.7) and 5th in steals per game (9.45).

Darla Hernandez ranks 9th in rebounds per game with 7.5. Katie Lamb leads the conference in three-point shooting with a clip of .368 and is 5th in the rankings with 2.1 made threes per game. Lamb also ranks 15th in steals per game, followed by Deniece Ryan and Livia Knapp who are tied for 18th with 1.5 per game.

Scouting #24/RV Colorado Mesa
The Mavericks have won their last 10 games to ascend to the top of the conference. They have a 17-4 overall record and a 12-2 mark in the RMAC. Colorado Mesa averages 71.5 points per game while slashing .438/.333/.789. They average 38.3 rebounds per game (+6.9), 17.1 assists per game, and 5.5 steals per game.

Leading the charge is junior Olivia Reed who ranks 2nd in the conference in points per game (21.8) and rebounds per game (11.0). Reed leads the RMAC in field goal percentage (.581) and ranks third in free throw percentage (.839). Colorado Mesa suffered the loss of reigning RMAC Freshman of the Year, Mason Rowland, three games into the season, but has recovered thanks to contributions from several players. Riley Hayes is putting up 14.4 points per game, followed by Kylie Kravig at 10.6 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. Kravig is one of the premier ball-handlers in NCAA DII and currently ranks 6th with 6.6 assists per game.

Fort Lewis has lost 12-straight meetings against Colorado Mesa, dating back to the 2017-18 season. The Skyhawks faced the Mavericks in mid-November in a nonconference contest where they fell by a 75-48 final. Knapp had 11 points in the loss.

Scouting Western Colorado
The Mountaineers are enjoying a remarkable season after earning just seven wins in 2023-24. They sit at 15-6 overall and 10-4 in conference play following wins over Mines (61-55) and MSU Denver (74-49). Western Colorado ranks second in the RMAC with six games left on the schedule. Western Colorado lost its first meeting of the season against Colorado Mesa (72-70) and ends the regular season against the Mavericks in Grand Junction.

Western Colorado averages 63.2 points per game while holding the opposition to 55 points per game. The Mountaineers slash .403/.309/.737 while averaging 40.9 rebounds per game (1st in RMAC). They come away with 10.4 assists, 6.2 steals, and 2.8 blocks per game. Ivey Schmidt leads the way by averaging 12.4 points per game, followed by Rachel Cockman at 12.0 per game. Cockman is the most effective shooter with a field goal percentage of .522. Three players average over five rebounds per game, including Cockman (7.3), Schmidt (6.2), and Brooklyn Seymour (5.8).

Fort Lewis faced Western Colorado on the road in January and lost by a 75-57 final. Deniece Ryan led the Skyhawks with 14 points and four steals. Western Colorado had five players in double-figures with Cockman's 16-point, 10-rebound double-double serving as the highlight.
