Women's lacrosse loses final game in California

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Freshman Jasmine Nguyen added to her team-leading goal count with three in a 16-8 loss for Skyhawks women's lacrosse against Dominican University.

Fort Lewis fell to 0-2 overall while Dominican improved to 3-0.

The Skyhawks were outshot 34-22 and were outplayed in ground balls (31-27) and draw controls (18-10). Sophomore Victoria Barletta followed Nguyen's three goal output with two of her own, followed by three players with one goal apiece.

Junior Sydney Tannaci was a highlight on defense with nine ground balls, six caused turnovers, and two draws. Freshman Maddie Thompson led the team with six draws and netted her first career goal. Senior goalkeeper Caley Lay added 12 saves in the loss.

Fort Lewis got on the board first thanks to a free position goal by Nguyen and added another goal at the 10:46 point out of the stick of Thompson. Dominican grabbed the lead with two goals in 40 seconds and scored two more late in the quarter to hold a 5-3 lead after one quarter.

The Penguins tacked on two more after back-to-back turnovers by the Skyhawks, increasing their lead to four goals. Lay secured a save on the next shot, and Fort Lewis worked up the field to eventually net a goal by Barletta. Both teams added one more goal in the quarter and then defense came to play. The final six minutes of the opening half went scoreless with five total caused turnovers—including three from the Skyhawks.

The scoreless stretch carried throughout the first four minutes of the third quarter until three goals by Dominican made it 11-5. Thompson caused a turnover at the three-minute mark, leading to a goal by sophomore Piper Price off an assist from sophomore Sierra Lund. Fort Lewis pulled within four goals late in the quarter when sophomore Rilee Powless drained a free-position opportunity for an 11-7 score.

The Penguins dominated the fourth quarter and scored three unanswered goals to carry a 14-7 lead into the final eight minutes. The Skyhawks won their next draw thanks to Thompson and converted with a goal by Nguyen to reach eight goals on the afternoon. The final six minutes saw two more goals by Dominican as well as two more saves from Lay to end the match in a 16-8 final.

Fort Lewis (0-2) will turn its attention to Saturday, March 1 when it heads to Denver for a neutral site contest against Davenport University at 3:00 p.m.
