Final home games await women's basketball

DURANGO, Colo. – Four games remain on the schedule for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team, including two this week that close out the home portion of the season.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks welcomed the top two teams in the conference last week, playing hard but ultimately falling in both contests. In the seven-point loss to No. 24 Colorado Mesa, The Skyhawks enjoyed a sound shooting night, going 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field at 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from three. The Mavericks owned a shooting percentage of 47.3 (26-of-55) and made three, three-pointers. The key difference in the match-up came at the stripe where Colorado Mesa went 23-of-28 versus a 3-of-5 night for Fort Lewis.

On Saturday, Fort Lewis surrendered an 86-70 loss to Western Colorado despite three quarters of well-executed basketball. Fort Lewis shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the free throw line. Western Colorado turned in a 56.7 shooting percentage (34-of-60). The Mountaineers earned 35 rebounds compared to 29 for the Skyhawks. The teams were even with 13 turnovers and 12 assists apiece. Senior Darla Hernandez led all players with a career-high 27 points.

Inside the Numbers
After a tough week, Fort Lewis has dropped in the team statistical rankings among conference opponents. The Skyhawks ranked 11th in points per game (63.9) while sitting 10th in points allowed per game (68.3). The squad ranks 4th in free throw percentage (74.2) but is 14th in total attempted free throws (299). They are 6th in field goal percentage (.402) and 5th in three-point field goal percentage (.303). Rebounding remains an area to key in on, and Fort Lewis continues to rank 13th (33.7) in boards per game. They are 13th in turnovers per game (17.2) and 5th in steals per game (9.13).

Darla Hernandez ranks 10th in rebounds per game with 7.2. Katie Lamb leads the conference in three-point shooting with a clip of 36.6 and is 6th in the rankings with 2.0 made threes per game. Lamb also ranks 15th in steals per game (1.6), followed by Livia Knapp (22nd, 1.5) and Deniece Ryan (25th, 1.4).

Scouting CSU Pueblo
The Pack is 15-9 overall, 10-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), and 5-5 on the road. The team played a Tuesday/Thursday split last week with a win over Colorado Christian (75-66) and loss to UCCS (63-59). As a team, CSU Pueblo slashes .391/.261/.696. They average 65.1 points per game (+2.0) and 36.2 rebounds per game (-5.7).

Individually, Alisha Little is leading the way by averaging 25.5 points per game and 11.8 rebounds per game—leading the conference in both categories. Tomia Johnson and Landri Hudson follow with 8.5 and 7.3 points per game, respectively. Little is the team-leader in total blocks (90) and total steals (66). The Skyhawks split the series last season with a 65-59 home win and a 73-65 road loss.

Scouting Colorado Christian
The Cougars are 8-16 overall and 6-10 in conference play. They lost games to CSU Pueblo (75-66) and UCCS (72-66) last week. Colorado Christian averages 65 points per game (-2.3) while slashing .389/.303/.806. Their free throw percentage (.806) ranks first in the conference. The Cougars come away with 34.1 rebounds per game (-2.3) to go along with 8.2 steals and 13.2 assists.

Nicole Bowlin leads the team with 13.2 points per game, followed by Dasiya Jones (12.6) and Victoria Perez (10.8). Jones leads the way with 9.9 rebounds per game, and five additional players average at least three. Bowlin is the leader with 85 total assists, and Perez has added 46 steals this season.

Fort Lewis lost a road contest to Colorado Christian on January 23rd by a 72-62 final score. Sophomore Natalie Guanella led the team with 17 points while Hernandez added 10 rebounds.

Fort Lewis ends the season on the road next week with games against Chadron State College (Feb. 27) and South Dakota Mines (March 1).
