Women's basketball welcomes Grizzlies on Tuesday, travels to face Cowgirls

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis College women's basketball snapped its losing streak over the weekend thanks to lights-out shooting and contributions from top to bottom. This week, the Skyhawks will play at home on Tuesday before returning to the road for a Saturday contest.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis began the road series with a narrow overtime loss to Colorado School of Mines. At the time, it was the Skyhawks' second-best shooting night of the season at 53.4 percent, leading to an 81-76 loss. Senior Livia Knapp contributed a career-high 30 points, the first Fort Lewis player since the 2022-23 season to reach that milestone. Freshman Katie Lamb followed with 20 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Senior Darla Hernandez turned in her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez led the team by playing 42 minutes, and four additional players were on the court for at least 35 minutes.

On Saturday, the Skyhawks shot even better with a 54.4 percent mark from the field to rank second on the season. Freshman Katie Lamb led all players with 21 points (5-of-8 3PT) and nine rebounds. Lamb surpassed 20 points for the fourth time this season and the third time in as many games. Senior Darla Hernandez followed with 18 points (8-of-12 FG), followed by freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez and sophomore Trista Hoobler with 11 points apiece. Palacio Gámez led the way with a career-high five assists, followed by senior Livia Knapp who handed out four.

Inside the Numbers
The Skyhawks have been hitting their stride in the last few weeks with sharper shooting and quality defensive stops. The elevation in play has lifted Fort Lewis in the conference statistical rankings. Notably, Fort Lewis ascended from 13th to 9th in points per game (64.0) while sitting 6th in points allowed per game (66.0). They now rank 4th in field goal percentage (.409) and 3rd in three-point field goal percentage (.304). Rebounding remains an area to key in on, and Fort Lewis continues to rank 13th (33.5) in boards per game. Turnovers have started to creep in again, and the Skyhawks sit 13th in turnovers per game (17.5). They make up some ground by ranking 5th in steals per game (9.4).

Hernandez has cracked into the league's top-25 ranks in points per game at 11.4 while also ranking 9th in rebounds with 7.9 per game. Lamb is leading the conference in 3PT FG% with a 38 percent mark and a 43 percent clip in RMAC-only games. She is third in the standings with 2.8 made threes per game. Lamb is 17th in steals per game (1.8), followed by Knapp (1.5) and Deniece Ryan (1.4) in 24th and 25th.

Scouting Adams State
The Grizzlies are 13-8 on the year and 8-4 in conference play following wins over Regis (77-64) and Mines (88-78) last week. The team is 5-1 at home but just 5-6 when playing on the road. Adams State averages 69.1 points per game (+2.5) while slashing .387/.297/.701. They are being drastically outrebounded 42.4 to 32.0 (-10.4). The Grizzlies are winning their games by forcing 23.2 turnovers per game and racking up 13.3 steals per game.

Kiiyani Anitielu leads the team with 15 points per game, followed by Taejhuan Hill at 12.3 points per game. Hill is also the leading rebounder with 9.3 per game—good for 6th in the RMAC. Angelline Nageak is the third player in double-digit points at 11.7 per game while leading the squad in assists (85) and steals (59).

Fort Lewis lost to Adams State on December 12 by a 79-60 final score in Alamosa. Knapp led the team with 18 points, followed by Ryan at 15. Lamb recorded 14 points and nine rebounds.

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
The Cowgirls own a 9-9 overall record and a 6-6 mark in conference play. They had been receiving votes in the South Central Regional poll but will likely fall off after a weekend split. NMHU began the week with a 75-62 win over MSU Denver before falling by an 84-80 final to Regis. The Cowgirls put up 70.1 points per game (+0.9) while slashing .426/.303/.712.

Juliana Aragon leads the team by averaging 16.4 while shooting 42.9 percent. Kapiolani Anitielu follows with 16.3 points per game and leads the team with 5.5 rebounds per game. Aragon is also the team leader with 77 assists and 37 steals.

Fort Lewis lost to New Mexico Highlands on December 10 by a 64-52 final in Las Vegas. Ryan earned 15 points, followed by Hernandez with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
