Skyhawks suffer slow start, fall to Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – After committing eight turnovers and surrendering 26 points in the first quarter, the Fort Lewis College (6-16, 3-11 RMAC) women's basketball team suffered a 77-64 loss to New Mexico Highlands University (11-9, 8-6 RMA) on the road.

The Skyhawks shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field compared to a 53.6 percent (30-of-56) clip for the Cowgirls. NMHU poured in 22 points off of turnovers and 38 points from the bench. The teams were even with 36 rebounds apiece and combined for 42 turnovers.

Junior Deniece Ryan led the Skyhawks with 16 points to go along with six rebounds. Freshman Katie Lamb followed with 14 points, and sophomore Natalie Guanella contributed 12. Senior Eva Kingston led the team with seven rebounds and sophomore Trista Hoobler earned a career-high seven assists.

Defense ruled the first 90 seconds of play with Lamb recording the team's first steal. The Cowgirls eventually tallied the first points of the afternoon at the stripe and added three more on the following possession for a 5-0 lead. Lamb countered with a perimeter bucket of her own just 20 seconds later to mark the Skyhawks' first points. Knapp scored the next three for Fort Lewis, and NMHU answered with a 9-0 scoring run to see a 14-6 lead. Turnovers began to pile on for the Skyhawks with eight through the first six minutes, lending to an 18-6 deficit before Guanella could score on a layup. Fort Lewis reached double-figures via foul shots but trailed 26-17 after one quarter.

The Cowgirls quickly added to their lead with a six-point burst before Lamb nailed a three for a 33-22 difference. NMHU responded with a three-pointer at the 7:29 point and scored again two minutes later to make it a 16-point difference. Kingston converted a three-point play to get Fort Lewis to 25 points, and Laisha Armendariz drilled a three-pointer off a feed from Hoobler to see the difference drop to 10 points. The next minute saw four quick points by the Cowgirls and the teams went scoreless for the next two minutes. Ryan was the last to score with one made free throw in the final seconds to make it 44-31 at the buzzer.

The home team scored the first four points of the third quarter before Lamb registered her third made three of the game, resulting in a 48-34 score. The difference remained at 14 points thanks to a layup by Guanella at the 6:45 mark, and Ryan held the 14-point differential one minute later with a drive to the basket. Shooting went cold over the next two minutes with Fort Lewis going just 1-of-10 from the field for a 59-41 score with 2:03 to go. Ryan finally ended the streak with a steal and layup, bringing her point total to 14 on the afternoon. Fort Lewis benefited from a late foul call, adding two more points to trail 67-47 heading into the final quarter.

The Skyhawks opened scoring in the fourth thanks to another corner three from Lamb, becoming the leading scorer before fouling out 30 seconds later. Hoobler later added a layup to see a 66-52 score at the media break. The Cowgirls broke out on a 7-0 scoring run out of the timeout while the Skyhawk suffered a three-minute scoring drought for a 73-52 difference. Sophomore Sarah Chick got on the board at the 3:39 point, and Ryan followed with a layup to cut the lead to 19 points with under two minutes remaining. Fort Lewis surged in the final minutes, cutting the lead but ultimately falling by a 77-64 final.

Fort Lewis (6-16, 3-11 RMAC) kicks off a stretch of four-straight home games next week against Colorado Mesa University and Western Colorado University. The Thursday, February 13th game against the Mavericks tips off at 5:30 p.m. while Saturday's game versus the Mountaineers is set for 1:00 p.m.
