Skyhawks mount second-half comeback for season's first win

LIBERTY, Mo. – Skyhawks women's lacrosse chipped away after trailing early and found a game winning goal from senior Diamond Velasco with 1:28 to go, earning their first win of the season over William Jewell College to begin a three-game road trip.

Fort Lewis improved to 1-4 on the year while William Jewell fell to 4-4 overall.

The Skyhawks were outshot 32-24 in total but held an 18-11 advantage in the second half. The teams combined for 60 turnovers and both struggled on clears with a combined percentage of 69.3. William Jewell won the draw 18 times versus nine times for Fort Lewis.

Freshman Jasmine Nguyen scored four goals to lead the Skyhawks, followed by Velasco who netted two. Sophomore Piper Price led the way with four ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with one goal. Senior Caley Lay matched a career high with 14 saves while putting together a season-best save percentage (56.0).

William Jewell got off to a hot start with its first goal just 11 seconds into play. Fort Lewis picked up a shot on goal by Zoi Delgado on its following possession, but the Cardinals' keeper recorded a save. The next four minutes went scoreless before another William Jewell goal made it 2-0 at the 9:35 mark. The Skyhawks struggled to maintain possession, committing their sixth turnover in just seven minutes to allow the Cardinals to see favorable field position. William Jewell managed to add two more goals and outshot Fort Lewis 13-1 in the quarter to carry a 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

The teams traded caused turnovers in the opening minutes of the second quarter, including one by Samantha Rodgers, before William Jewell netted its fifth goal of the afternoon at the 10-minute mark. Barletta finally broke through for the Skyhawks with her fifth goal of the season to make it 5-1, but the Cardinals responded just 10 seconds later with another score. Lay collected two more saves over the next three minutes to hold the score at 6-1 heading into the final five minutes of the half. Fort Lewis took advantage of a woman-up opportunity at 3:48 and scored their second goal of the game thanks to a shot from Piper Price. Nguyen followed with her team-leading ninth goal of the season, but William Jewell scored the last goal of the half to carry a 7-3 edge at halftime.

Nguyen began the third quarter with another goal to pull Fort Lewis within three, and then goals from her and Delgado eventually made it 8-6. The Skyhawks took advantage of a wide, free-position shot from William Jewell, turning it into a goal from Diamond Velasco and a one-goal game. The Cardinals added much needed separation with a goal at the 3:36 mark for a 9-7 lead and ended the quarter by reaching 10 goals after a failed clear attempt by the Skyhawks. Fort Lewis outscored William Jewell 4-3 in the quarter with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

Defense held strong through the first two minutes of the fourth quarter before the home team broke through with another goal with 12:37 on the clock. Three minutes later, Nguyen caused a turnover and created a goal scoring opportunity to bring Fort Lewis back within three goals. Next, Price caused a turnover which led to a free-position goal from Phoebe Ramirez for an 11-9 game with nine minutes to play. William Jewell called a timeout and swapped goalkeepers, but Rilee Powless was unphased and scored another goal for an 11-10 score. The comeback continued into the seven-minute warning when Rodgers found the back of the net to tie things up. Lay made a key save on a free position shot for William Jewell, and the teams went on to play in a deadlock for the next six minutes until a veteran goal by Velasco gave her team the first lead of the afternoon with 1:28 to go. Marla Warrior forced a caused turnover in the final moments, and Fort Lewis managed to run out the clock for a road win.

Fort Lewis (1-4) will travel and recover before facing Quincy University on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Illinois.
