Skyhawks in the hunt for top-six finish in Arizona

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Fort Lewis women's golf team is off to one of its hottest starts of the 2024-25 campaign, with the Skyhawks residing in sixth place among twelve teams after the opening round of the SMSU Challenge at the Wigwam Golf Club Blue Course.
 
Rockhurst took a commanding lead through the first of two rounds in the tournament, securing an 11-stroke advantage over second-place Saint Martin's with a 313 (+33) team score. The Hawks boast three individuals tied for third place with a trio of 77s (+7). On the individual scoreboard, MSU Denver's Izabella Pesicka and MSU Billings' Gia Vargas pace the field, carding a pair of 76s (+6).
 
Fort Lewis found itself in sixth place among the twelve teams after round one, scoring a 339 (+59) to sit five strokes behind fifth-place MSU Denver (334, +54) and nine strokes back from third-place MSU Billings (330, +50). Host institution Southwest Minnesota State trails the Skyhawks in seventh place on a 345 (+65) team score.
 
Sophomore Peyton Gibby, who is coming off a tie for 69th at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, is off to the hottest start among Skyhawks with ten-over-par 80. Gibby birdied on hole four to offset six bogeys and resides in ninth place. Isabel Bustillos is hot on Gibby's heels, trailing by just two strokes with a 12-over 82 and a birdie of her own on hole one to stand in 12th. Sarah Grenemyer is the third Skyhawk among the top 25, sitting in 21st on a 15-over 85.
 
The Fort Lewis duo of Vivianna Holguin and Dimery Plewe trail the pack in a tie for 43rd with a pair of identical 92s (+22). Annika Gutierrez, who is competing as an unattached individual and cannot contribute to the team's overall score, climbed to 33rd on an 88 (+18).

The Skyhawks will make one final trip around Wigwam Golf Club's Blue Course tomorrow morning, starting at 10:16 a.m.
