3/13/2025 6:20:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Hannah Hartwell made a strong surge in the second half of the 5000m at the 2025 NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships, climbing from seventh to third place to secure her third career All-American honor.

Her third-place finish marks the second-best result in Fort Lewis College history at a national championship, trailing only Katie Heck's runner-up performance in the 800m at the 2023 Outdoor Championships.

The podium was dominated by Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) runners, with the top four finishers all representing the league. Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge of Colorado School of Mines claimed the national title, followed by Adams State's Tristian Spence in second. Hartwell secured third place, while Anna Fauske of UCCS finished fourth.

How It Happened
Hartwell maintained a steady pace through the first 1400m, fluctuating between fourth and sixth place before settling into third at the one-mile mark. She picked up speed in the next split, running 38.45 to overtake Spence and move into second. As the lead pack intensified its pace over the next 800m, Hartwell remained in contention within the top four.

At the two-mile mark, she slipped to fifth after a West Texas A&M runner passed her on the inside. Despite some separation among the front-runners, eight athletes were still in the mix with nine laps to go. Undeterred, Hartwell gradually regained ground, moving up to fifth by the 4000m mark with a 40.29 split.

She maintained that position through the 4200m, 4400m, and 4600m splits before launching her final push. In the next 200m, she recorded a blistering 37.17 split—the second-fastest in the field—before closing with an incredible 34.33 final 200m, the fastest of any competitor. Hartwell crossed the finish line in 16:11.91, securing third place and recording the second-fastest 5000m time in program history.

What's Next – Saturday's 3k (2:40 p.m. MST)
Hartwell is the 18th-ranked entry in the 3k finals on Saturday with a seed time of 9:31.07. Once again, the RMAC is heavily represented in the field. Three of the top five competitors hail from the conference with eight total RMAC runners competing in the race. Hartwell is coming off First-Team All-Conference honors in the 3k at last week's championships where she placed third.
