Gibby earns career finish to close out SMSU Challenge

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – True freshman Peyton Gibby put on her best performance of the season, taking sixth place as an individual to guide Fort Lewis to a fifth-place finish at the SMSU Challenge over at the Wigwam Golf Club.
 
Fort Lewis shot a 326 (+46) through its second round, shaving off 13 strokes from yesterday's 339 (+59) to post a team score of 665 (+105) and secure the Skyhawks highest team finish on the road since the 2021-22 campaign. MSU Denver fell two spots to sixth place behind FLC on a 677 (+117), while Colorado Mesa maintained its edge in fourth place with a 648 (+88). Saint Martin's won team medalist honors, beating out round one leader Rockhurst by three strokes, 638 (+75) to 638 (+78).
 
Gibby, a recent graduate of Campo Verde High School in Gilbert, Ariz., recorded back-to-back scores of 80 (+10) and 79 (+9) to both tie her career-best single-round low and shoot a career-best two-round score of 159 (+19). In addition, Gibby notched the second-best finish of any Skyhawk this season. MSU Billings' Gia Vargas shot a 76 (+6) in round one and a 73 (+3) in round two to win individual medalist honors on a 149 (+9).
 
Senior Vivianna Holguin made the biggest individual jump of any Skyhawk, shooting a 78 (+8) in her second round to cut down 14 strokes and jump 17 spots on the scoreboard to finish in 26th on a 170 (+30). Isabel Bustillos finished just behind Holguin in a tie 27th on a 171 (+31), and Sarah Grenemyer was closely behind in a tie for 30th with a 172 (+32). Dimery Plewe rounded out the Skyhawks, taking a tie for 38th on a 174 (+34). Annika Gutierrez, who competed unattached and could not contribute to the team's overall score, took a tie for 43rd on a 177 (+37).

Fort Lewis will enjoy spring break next week before returning to a familiar Walking Stick Golf Course over in Pueblo, Colo., for the Southern Colorado Open hosted by CSU Pueblo on Sunday and Monday, Mar. 23-24.
