How It Happened
Hartwell made significant strides early in the race. By the 600m mark, she had jumped 11 spots to move into sixth place and held that position through the 800m split. Over the following 200m, she posted a 40.23-second split, dropping into ninth place, but then accelerated with a 38.31-second split to climb into fifth place with 10 laps remaining. Staying close behind lead runner Alyssa Becker from U-Mary, Hartwell battled in a tight group and dropped to 12th with 1400m remaining. At the 2000m split, she surged around the outside of the 11 runners ahead to take the lead with a 37.85-second split. Although she maintained her position for the next 200m, runners from Adams State and Lee University eventually passed her. With two laps remaining, the junior faded by six spots, ultimately crossing the finish line in 10th place with a time of 9:33.19.
