Bustillos, Gibby pace Skyhawks through opening round of Southern Colorado Open

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis women's golf team shot 24 strokes above par in the first round of the Southern Colorado Open, hosted by No. 41 CSU Pueblo, putting the Skyhawks just five strokes back from a top-half finish among the thirteen teams.
 
Fort Lewis shot a 312 (+24) to notch a tie with Seattle Pacific for eighth place following the first trip around Walking Stick Golf Course. South Dakota Mines trails the duo with a 329 (+41), while MSU Denver holds a one-stroke advantage on a 311 (+23). Western New Mexico resides in sixth on a 307 (+19).
 
No. 5 New Mexico Junior College leads the tournament in first place with a 294 (+6), followed by No. 21 Simon Fraser in second with a 298 (+10) and the host ThunderWolves in third with a 300 (+12). On the individual leader board, Francesca Sumcad, a member of the Colorado Buffaloes competing as an unattached individual, leads the field by two strokes with a 68 (-4).
 
Freshman Peyton Gibby, coming off a career-best tie for 6th at the SMSU Challenge (Mar. 13-14), is neck and neck with sophomore Isabel Bustillos as the duo sits tied for 29th on a pair of 77s (+5). Bustillos, however, leads Gibby with two birdies to none.
 
Senior Vivianna Holguin sits one stroke behind in a tie for 35th with a 78 (+6), and both Dimery Plewe and Sarah Grenemyer, who round out the five Skyhawks to contribute to the team's score, are another two strokes back in a tie for 41st with an 80 (+8). The final three Skyhawks are all competing as unattached individuals, including Sabrina Ladd in a tie for 52nd with an 83 (+11), Annika Gutierrez in 63rd with an 86 (+14), and Elina Beyer in 80th with a 95 (+23).

The Skyhawks will close out the Southern Colorado Open with the final round tomorrow, Monday, Mar. 24, at Walking Stick Golf Course.
