Women’s golf rises to sixth place finish at Southern Colorado Open

Grenemyer earns top 25 finish

PUEBLO, Colo. – Fort Lewis went into the final round in a tie for eighth place, but the Skyhawks quickly cut down a six-stroke gap and held off Western New Mexico and MSU Denver to capture a sixth-place team finish at the Southern Colorado Open over at CSU Pueblo's Walking Stick Golf Course.
 
Seattle Pacific and Fort Lewis entered the final round tied for eighth place after both teams carded a 312 (+24). The Skyhawks, despite adding three strokes and carding a 315 (+27) in the second round, managed to cut the gap between MSU Denver and Western New Mexico, edging both squads on a final team score of 627 (+51). The Roadrunners and Mustangs finished the tournament with a pair of 629s (+53).
 
No. 21 Simon Fraser, who trailed New Mexico Junior College 298 (+10) to 294 (+6), managed to stay steady with another 298 (+10) in round two to ultimately capture team medalist honors on a combined score of 596 (+20). Colorado's Francesca Sumad, one of two Buffaloes competing as an unattached individual, held her top spot in the final round to win individual medalist honors on a four-under-par total of 140. Sumad's teammate, Ellen O'Shaughnessy, took second place on a 142 (-2).
 
Sophomore Sarah Grenemyer made quite the climb in round two, with the Albuquerque, N.M., native improving 16 spots from a tie for 41st into a tie for 25th. Grenemyer shot an eight-over-par 80 in round one before shaving off five strokes with a 75 (+3) in round two for a combined score of 155 (+11).
 
Senior Vivianna Holguin climbed five spots as well, moving from a tie for 35th into a tie for 30th on back-to-back scores of 78 (+6) to finish with a 156 (+12) overall. Sophomore Isabel Bustillos finished one stroke back in a tie for 32nd after carding a 157 (+13). Freshman Peyton Gibby shot a 159 (+15) tie for 37th and junior Dimery Plewe carded a 164 (+20) to tie for 50th, rounding out Fort Lewis' team scoring contributors.
 
Fort Lewis traveled its three remaining Skyhawks, including senior Sabrina Ladd (169, +25), sophomore Annika Gutierrez (174, +30), and freshman Elina Beyer (188, +44), who captured a tie for 57th, a tie for 66th, and 81st, respectively.

Fort Lewis' next test will be the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association's Palm Valley Classic at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz., on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 4-5.
