Skyhawks lose to Mavericks in Sunday matchup

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After a two-goal differential in the first quarter, the Fort Lewis College (1-10, 0-5 RMAC) women's lacrosse team was outscored 11-2 to fall in an eventual 17-6 final to Colorado Mesa University (6-4, 5-0 RMAC) on Sunday.

Fort Lewis was outshot 40-21 with a 28-15 difference in shots on goal. The Skyhawks committed 20 turnovers while going 16-of-21 on clears. Colorado Mesa controlled 15 draws and collected 26 ground balls.

Freshman Jasmine Nguyen scored four goals for Fort Lewis, followed by senior Diamond Velasco and sophomore Grace Butler with one each. The goal from Butler was the first of her career. Junior Samantha Rodgers led the team with four draws while junior Sydney Tannaci was credited with a team-high three caused turnovers. Freshman Abigail Leighty played 50 minutes in goal with 11 saves and 11 goals allowed.

Fort Lewis struck first with a free-position goal by Nguyen, but Colorado Mesa responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead. A draw control by freshman Ava Postal set up a goal from Velasco, closing the gap to 5-2. The Mavericks added another goal before Butler and Nguyen scored back-to-back to make it 6-4. However, Colorado Mesa pulled away with five straight goals in the second quarter, despite four saves from Leighty, taking an 11-4 lead into halftime.

The Skyhawks' defense held strong for the opening minutes of the third quarter, but a free-position goal from the Mavericks reignited their offense. They added three more goals before Nguyen netted her 18th goal of the season, cutting the deficit back to 10 goals. A late shot on goal by junior Zoi Delgado ended the third quarter with Fort Lewis trailing 14-4. In the final quarter, Fort Lewis recorded four shots on goal, with Nguyen adding one more tally to end the game in a 17-6 loss.

The Skyhawks (1-10, 0-5 RMAC) continue their road trip next week, facing Regis University on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Regis Turf Field. They'll then travel to UCCS for a Sunday noon matchup against the Mountain Lions in Colorado Springs.
