DURANGO, Colo. — After three years guiding Fort Lewis College Athletics through a period of growth and collaboration, Director of Athletics Travis Whipple will step down at the end of August to become vice president of athletics at Southwest Minnesota State University.
"It's been an incredible honor to serve at Fort Lewis College during such a transformational time," Whipple said. "The campus and community embraced our family from day one, and we will always be grateful. This journey has been a true team effort, and FLC will forever hold a special place in our hearts."
Since Whipple joined FLC in 2022, Skyhawk Athletics has made significant progress in competition, facilities, community engagement, and academics. The department recorded three consecutive years surpassing $2 million in external support, including a record $2.2 million from more than 1,700 donors in the past year. Corporate partnerships grew by 20%, and student-athletes contributed over 5,000 hours of community service during his tenure.
Student-athletes also achieved a department-wide 3.25 GPA, supported by expanded academic and wellness resources.
Partnerships with organizations such as the Southern Ute Recreation Center, Boys & Girls Club, Special Olympics, local youth sports programs, and Big Brothers Big Sisters strengthened the department's role in the community.
Whipple oversaw the completion of the new CommonSpirit Sports Performance Center. On the field, FLC climbed as high as No. 19 in the Learfield Cup standings, earned a top-10 NCAA Division II attendance ranking in 2023–24, and placed in the top 15 in 2024–25.
FLC President Heather Shotton praised Whipple's leadership and collaborative approach.
"Travis has brought energy, vision, and a commitment to our student-athletes," Shotton said. "He has worked with coaches, staff, and supporters to strengthen our programs, expand community connections, and enhance the student-athlete experience. We thank him for his service and wish him the very best in this next chapter."
Melissa Mount, vice president for advancement, also noted his impact on donor and partner engagement.
"Travis has been an incredible partner in advancing a culture of philanthropy, collaboration, and gratitude within our Skyhawk Athletics program," Mount said. "He has helped secure transformative investments in our facilities and programs to enhance the student-athlete experience - from the $4 million gift that made the CommonSpirit Sports Performance Center possible to building a strong base of fan support through annual contributions - positioning Skyhawk Athletics for continued success."
Shawn Jakubowski, associate athletic director for external relations, will serve as interim athletic director. A national search for FLC's next Athletic Director will launch later this month.
