Skyhawks drop RMAC opener to #13 Mountain Lions, 1-0

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fort Lewis College (3-3-1, 0-1 RMAC) conceded a goal in the 30th minute to drop its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener to No. 13 UCCS (5-1-1, 1-0 RMAC) on the road.

The Skyhawks held a 12-6 advantage in shots for the match while the teams were even with four shots on goal apiece. There were just four corner kicks in the match, and the teams combined for 16 fouls and three yellow cards.

Seven individuals played full-time for Fort Lewis compared to six for UCCS. Senior Rozlin Gomez led the team with three shots, one of which was on target. Juniors Amber Otts and Jenna Salazar, as well as redshirt freshman Kiana Jamerson accounted for the three additional shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan collected two saves in the effort.

Fort Lewis strung together a trio of shots in the opening 16 minutes of play, including two that were blocked by UCCS defenders. Lujan collected her first save of the evening in the 19th minute, and the teams traded through ins over the next 10 minutes of play.

The Mountain Lions broke through in the 30th minute with an intercepted pass just outside the box. Brooke Pavlich managed the steal and raced ahead of two Fort Lewis defenders and tucked a shot into the top-left corner to make it 1-0. The Skyhawks nearly found the equalizer in the 44th minute with an accurate pass ahead from Molly Widmark. Widmark located Kiana Jamerson who met the opposing keeper in what was the final save of the half.

The first half opened with a prime chance for UCCS after a pass found the crashing forward at the top of the box. The Skyhawks defense read the developing play and deflected the chance, and the rebounded shot trailed wide for a goal kick. Fort Lewis continued its offensive pressure with shots on goal from Gomez and Otts forcing a pair of saves by the opposing keeper.

Fort Lewis continued to pressure the UCCS defense with the majority of possession, holding the Mountain Lions to two more shots in the back portion of the second half. Lujan earned another save in the 83rd minute, and Salazar was the last played to send a shot on target in the 88th minute to close out the match in a 1-0 score.

Fort Lewis is back on the pitch this Sunday at 1:00 PM at Stermole Soccer Stadium where it faces No. 9 Colorado School of Mines (3-1-1). The teams last faced in the RMAC Tournament Championship match where the Orediggers earned a 1-0 win over the Skyhawks. The match serves as the conference opener for Mines who last played on September 20 against No. 20 Seattle Pacific (T, 2-2).
