Fort Lewis falls in five to South Dakota Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – In a match full of momentum swings, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team fell in five sets to South Dakota Mines on Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Skyhawks dropped to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in RMAC action, while the Hardrockers improved to 2-8 and 2-0 in league play. South Dakota Mines outhit Fort Lewis .196 to .168, fueled by hitting over .300 in the final two sets. The Skyhawks finished with a 90–84 edge in digs.

Junior Alina Nunez led the attack with 20 kills and 12 digs, while freshman Cambria Freymuth added 11 kills. Sophomore libero Emery Pomroy collected 27 digs and five assists, and freshman setter Arianna Reyna posted a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs.

Fort Lewis came out strong in the opening set, racing to a 6-1 lead behind an Ella Butler kill. A block by freshman Caroline Munson stretched the advantage to 13-6, but the Hardrockers fought back with six straight points to stave off set point. A service error finally sealed the 25-23 win for the Skyhawks.

The second set featured back-and-forth play with multiple ties and lead changes. South Dakota Mines pulled ahead 13-10, but Fort Lewis responded with a 5-0 run to go up 15-13. The Hardrockers countered with their own surge, reaching 20 points on a middle kill. Reyna brought the Skyhawks within one late, but South Dakota Mines closed it out with an overpass kill, 25-23.

In the third, Fort Lewis took a 5-2 lead after two kills from Jordan DeJesus and held the edge until a block on junior Ellie Ames tied the score at 10-9. From there, the teams traded points through 13 ties in a marathon 44-minute set. A service error and a kill from Freymuth finally secured the 27-25 win for the Skyhawks.

Attacking errors hurt Fort Lewis in the fourth set as South Dakota Mines grabbed an early lead. The Skyhawks tied it at 11-11 after a Rylie Kalahiki kill, but the Hardrockers slowly pulled away. Three late kills from their outsides set up set point, and despite Nunez extending the frame with her fourth kill of the set, a Fort Lewis error ended it 25-22.

The decisive fifth set featured six early ties before a 4-0 Hardrocker run put the visitors in control. DeJesus stopped the surge with a kill, and a Mines error cut the deficit to two, but another four-point push sealed the match. A Skyhawk attacking error closed it out, 15-9.

Fort Lewis (7-2, 1-1 RMAC) hits the road next weekend, visiting Chadron State (3-7, 0-2 RMAC) on Friday, September 26, before facing Regis (0-10, 0-2 RMAC) on Saturday in Denver.
