Skyhawks sweep Eagles, improve to 8-2

CHADRON, Neb. – Skyhawks volleyball rallied late in the third set to knock off Chadron State College (3-8, 0-3 RMAC) on Friday night, earning its first win inside the Chicoine Center since 2013. The victory lifts Fort Lewis to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play.

The Skyhawks put together a balanced offensive night, hitting .265 with 51 kills compared to .172 and 32 kills for the Eagles. Fort Lewis also held the edge in serving (six aces) and defense (64 digs).

Freshman Cambria Freymuth paced the attack with 13 kills on a .321 clip, followed closely by junior Jordan DeJesus with 11. Middle blockers Ella Butler and Ellie Ames combined for 12 kills on 26 errorless swings, while freshman libero Alyx Daugherty dug a career-high 24 balls. Freshman setter Arianna Reyna added 26 assists.

Fort Lewis set the tone early, using back-to-back aces from Sophia Garn to grab a 7-4 advantage. The lead stretched to 15-10 after DeJesus and Garn delivered back-to-back points, and the Skyhawks closed out a tight opener, 25-22.

Set two belonged to Fort Lewis from the start. An ace from Butler and kills from Ryli Kalahiki fueled a 10-5 lead, and the offense kept rolling behind Butler, Freymuth, and the outsides. Ivy Schoditsch put away a kill to set up set point, and a Chadron State error sealed a dominant 25-13 win. The Skyhawks hit .378 in the frame with 17 kills on 37 swings.

Chadron State pushed back in the third, using a 6-0 run to build a 12-6 advantage. The Skyhawks chipped away, sparked by kills from Alina Nunez and Freymuth to cut the deficit to four. A Munson overpass kill tied it at 20-20, and Nunez followed with an off-speed shot to put Fort Lewis ahead. After the Eagles knotted the score at 22, the Skyhawks slammed down three straight kills to close the match, 25-22.

Fort Lewis (8-2, 2-1 RMAC) continues its road trip tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. matchup at Regis University (0-10, 0-2 RMAC).
