Fort Lewis drops heartbreaker to South Dakota Mines

Morris fuels offense with career passing performance

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Fort Lewis (1-3, 0-2 RMAC) took a two-possession lead early in the second half and even picked-off South Dakota Mines (1-4, 1-2 RMAC) late in the fourth quarter, but the Skyhawks couldn't hang on in the final minutes, dropping its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road game 22-21 to the Hardrockers at a boisterous O'Harra Stadium.
 
Jacob Morris threw for a career-best 191 yards and one touchdown on 13 completions in 29 attempts (44.8 percent), including an 82-yard touchdown connection to Zachary Gaumont early in the second quarter to pull back even with the Hardrockers, guiding Fort Lewis to 359 yards of total offense. Gaumont made two additional receptions to lead all non-quarterbacks with 129 yards and notch his third career 100-yard receiving game.
 
South Dakota Mines put up 310 yards through the air en route to its 371 yards of total offense, with all passing yards coming from the arm of Gage Baker, who made 36 completions in 52 attempts (69.2 percent) for two touchdowns and one interception while taking on a sack. Elijah Portela made the lone pick, his second interception of the season, at a critical moment in the fourth quarter with 3:27 seconds left to play before a missed field goal by FLC set up Baker to lead a 12-play, 67-yard drive in 58 seconds and set up Sam Eccles' game-winning field goal.
 
On the ground, the Skyhawks led the Hardrockers 168 yards to 61, led by Jake Jones, who made seven carries for a game-high 65 yards. In addition, Fort Lewis tailbacks were hit in the backfield for a loss of just five total yards. KB Broadus was the ace-in-the-hole near the goal line, running for two touchdowns and eight yards on five carries. On the defensive side, Kameron Lewis led all players with a career-high 11 total tackles, including ten solo and one assisted, while also making one tackle for four yards lost. Jake Penney finished with nine total tackles and one tackle for two yards lost, while Samuel Ballas had quite the afternoon in the backfield, making six solo tackles with four tackles for 26 yards lost, including a solo eight-yard sack.
 
Fort Lewis converted on just five of 17 third downs (29.4 percent), and surrendered 73 yards and two first downs on penalties. South Dakota Mines won time of possession 32:30-to-27:30, and committed just two penalties for ten yards. In addition, Eccles had a three-for-four day for the SDM special teams, making field goals from 20 yards, 27 yards, and 30 yards, with his lone miss being a 40-yard attempt that was blocked by Jordan Thomas.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis drops its seventh-consecutive game to South Dakota Mines to trail the Hardrockers 7-3 all-time and 4-1 in Rapid City, S.D.
-Jacob Morris made a career-high 13 completions for a career-high 191 yards.
-Zachary Gaumont brought down a season-high 129 yards, the most by a Skyhawk in 2025, to secure his third 100-yard receiving game and the first by a Fort Lewis receiver thus far.
-Elijah Portela made his second interception of the season to lead all Skyhawks and move into a tie for the second-most interceptions in the RMAC.
-Kameron Lewis recorded double-digit tackles for the first time in his career, setting career-highs in solo tackles (10) and total tackles (11).
-Jordan Thomas blocked the third kick of his career.
-KB Broadus rushed for a career-high two touchdowns.
