Men’s golf tripped up through round one in Mexico

AKUMAL, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO – The Fort Lewis men's golf team finds itself trailing the field in 14th thanks to a first-round 324 (+36) as a team at the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya down at PGA Riviera Maya in Mexico.
 
Benjamin Harding led the Skyhawks by a significant margin across the first 18 holes, posting a bogey-free 35 (-1) on the front nine before a three-bogey back nine put the Longmont, Colo., native in a tie for seventh as an individual on a 74 (+2). Ian Henderson stands as the next man up, earning a tie for 33rd on a six-over-par 78.
 
As a unit, Fort Lewis leads Texas A&M International University (326, +38) by one stroke, and chases Western New Mexico University and Team Mexico in 12th (318, +30), California State University San Bernardino in 11th (316, +28), and No. 19 Colorado Mesa University (313, +25) in tenth.
 
West Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Tyler, who each received votes on the Golf Coaches Association of America Bushnell/Golfweek DII national poll, are tied on the team leaderboard as both squads fired an 11-over-par 299. As for individuals, the Buffaloes' Luis Palomo, who won the San Juan Intercollegiate on a 197 (-16) last weekend, sits tied with Lubbock Christian University's Maximiliano Dufey and University of Texas Permian Basin's Will Tate on top of the leaderboard at even par (72).
 
The final three Skyhawks reside within one stroke of one another as Jordan Jennings fired a 14-over 86 to sit tied for 69th, followed by Jake Chesler and Traejan Andrews, who carded identical 87s to sit tied for 72nd.
 
Round two will feature staggered tee times starting at 8:30 a.m.
