No. 5 Skyhawks suffer first setback of 2025 at the hands of No. 8 ThunderWolves

Valverde’s header spoils shutout

PUEBLO, Colo. – No. 5 Fort Lewis (4-1-2) peppered No. 8 CSU Pueblo (4-0-4) with 17 total shots, placing seven shots on goal, but the top-ranked Skyhawks could only find the net once while the home ThunderWolves capitalized on defensive mistakes to hand FLC its first loss of the season 2-1 at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

CSU Pueblo finished the match with 11 shots, placing six between the posts. Lucas Martin managed four saves against six saves for Esteban Gonzalez. In addition, the ThunderWolves played a man down from the 73rd minute on after Leonardo Vilchis was dealt his second caution of the match. Seven other members of The Pack were given caution against one for FLC.

The ThunderWolves went up early in just the 10th minute after gaining possession on a contested pass deep in the Skyhawks defensive third. Vilchis found space driving down the right edge of the penalty box and sent service clear across the area to a wide-open Will Boyle, who punched it low inside the left post.

It wasn't until the 72nd minute that CSU Pueblo extended its lead, slowly building its offensive pressure after a flurry of shots from the Skyhawks. A Pack player sent service into the box from the sideline, where it was headed straight up into the sky, but Nick Cenek went unmarked, using one-touch to collect before firing a shot inside the near post from 12 yards out and off the hands of a diving Martin.

Fort Lewis was given a penalty kick moments later in the 77th minute, but Lorenz Guintini went low inside the right post, and Gonzalez guessed correctly to keep FLC out of the goal. FLC kept the pressure, earning back-to-back corner kicks, before Fabrizio Aguilera stepped to the second, sending a bending service pass to the back post, where Mathias Valverde was waiting to head in his second goal of the season.
