No. 15 Fort Lewis draws with MSU Denver for first RMAC result

Guintini nets team-leading sixth goal

DURANGO, Colo. – The No. 15 nationally ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team (4-1-3, 0-0-1 RMAC) earned a point at home on Sunday afternoon in its first completed Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match, battling to a 1-1 draw against Metropolitan State University of Denver (3-2-5, 1-0-1 RMAC) under blue skies on Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis won the overall battle for possession 53 percent to 47 percent, but MSU Denver applied just as much pressure, trailing just 13-to-15 in total shots, despite firing off nine shots to the Skyhawks' four in the opening half. It was otherwise a near deadlock, with both teams taking five corner kicks and FLC committing 11 fouls to MSUD's 10. Nick McNeil recorded four saves for the Roadrunners, and Lucas Martin tallied three.

Lorenz Guintini put his touch to the test with his first goal in just the fourth minute of action. Raul Baptista Filipe sent service across the half line forward to Alessio Andreottola, who then sent a quick touch forward to Guintini. As Guintini neared the penalty line, McNeil vacated the net to contest, but Guintini quickly flicked the ball nearly 30 yards straight up into the air, where it found just enough wind to glance beneath the crossbar and in for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Baptista Filipe earned his first assist of the year, and Andreottola his NCAA Division II-leading eighth assist in as many matches.

MSU Denver was quick to equalize, however, striking in to 24th minute to bring about a whole new energy on Dirks Field. Robert Summer crossed the half line with possession before sending service forward to a streaking Matt Vogel. Vogel managed to drive into the penalty box, jump the sliding goalkeeper, and capitalize on the empty net for his third goal of the year.
