Skyhawks men improve, still trail at Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya

AKUMAL, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO – Despite managing to cut down 13 strokes as a team and carding a 311 (+23), the Skyhawks men's golf team still trails much of the field, sitting tied for 13th place as a team after two rounds down at PGA Riviera Maya.
 
Fort Lewis added its 311 to its first-round score of 324 (+37) to sit at 635 (+59) overall and tied with Team Mexico. The Skyhawks chase 12th-place Western New Mexico University (634, +58) by one stroke, 11th-place and No. 8-ranked Oklahoma Christian University (629, +53) by six strokes, and 10th-place California State University San Bernardino (626, +50) by eight strokes.
 
University of Texas at Tyler, who also received votes on the latest national poll, has pulled away from West Texas A&M University, leading the tournament with a team score of 598 (+22). The second-place Buffaloes are the only other squad below 600, sitting at 599 (+23) overall. University of Texas Permian Basin's Will Tate, who was tied for the lead in round one, has taken sole possession of the individual leaderboard with a two-stroke lead as the only player below par with a 143 (-1).
 
Benjamin Harding has maintained pace as the Skyhawks leader, still holding onto a top 15 finish after shooting a four-over-par 76 with two birdies to stand at 150 (+6) overall. Ian Henderson held on as the next man up, sitting tied for 49th with his second-round 82 (+10), putting him at 159 (+15) overall.
 
Traejan Andrews made quite the climb in round two, moving up 14 spots on the leaderboard to climb into a tie for 58th overall. Andrews managed an 87 (+15) in round one, but bounced back with a 75 (+3), a 12-stroke improvement, to bring his total to 162 (+18). Rounding out Fort Lewis is the duo of Jordan Jennings, tied for 63rd, and Jake Chesler in 72nd, on scores of 164 (+20) and 173 (+29), respectively.
 
The final round will begin with tee times at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 30.
