Salazar provides game-winner in shutout over Hilltoppers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After controlling the match with stout defense for more than 80 minutes, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team finally broke through as junior Jenna Salazar buried the game-winner in the 83rd minute to secure a 1-0 victory over St. Edward's University on Saturday.

The win moves the Skyhawks to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Hilltoppers drop to 0-0-2.

Fort Lewis dictated the pace offensively, outshooting St. Edward's 18-7 and holding a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Hilltoppers committed 13 fouls compared to nine for the Skyhawks, and the teams combined for seven corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan earned her first career win in net. While she wasn't forced to make a save on paper, Lujan showed poise with several decisive reads that kept the Skyhawks in control. The back line of Amber Otts, Ann Spence, and Renee Junna, who each played a full 90 minutes, anchored the defensive unit and limited St. Edward's to minimal chances.

The Hilltoppers came out strong with the game's first two shots, including a fourth-minute attempt that sailed high after an intercepted pass. Fort Lewis settled in quickly, generating its first shot on frame in the 17th minute from senior Abigail Nkrumah, but St. Edward's goalkeeper Daria Schlumbohm was there for the save. Moments later, the Hilltoppers nearly converted on a set piece, only for Lujan to leap across goal to deny the effort.

Otts highlighted the defensive effort with a series of critical stops, including a 29th-minute challenge that forced a Hilltopper attacker into a hurried miss. Junna added a blocked shot late in the half to preserve the 0-0 scoreline heading into the break.

The Skyhawks pressed in the second half, starting with a chance from senior Rozlin Gomez, whose shot was stopped by the keeper. Gomez nearly broke through again in the 56th minute with a curling effort that missed just high. Freshman Molly Widmark and teammate Lova Sjölund connected for another near-miss shortly after.

As the Skyhawks piled on pressure, the breakthrough came in the 84th minute. After a St. Edward's handball just outside the box, Salazar stepped up and rifled a free kick through traffic and past the keeper's right side to put Fort Lewis in front.

The Skyhawks closed out the match with disciplined possession and steady defense to claim their first win of the season.

Fort Lewis (1-0-1) returns home next week to Dirks Field for two matches: Eastern New Mexico on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and Lubbock Christian University on Saturday, also at 7:00 p.m.
