Volleyball splits opening day, Wong earns first win

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Skyhawks volleyball opened the season with a four-set win over New Mexico Highlands, marking the first victory for head coach Justin Wong, before falling in a five-set battle to tournament host Western New Mexico in the nightcap at the Mustang Invite.

Match One: Fort Lewis 3, New Mexico Highlands 1
Fort Lewis outhit NMHU .172 to .115 and added eight service aces. Blocks were hard to come by, with only three recorded in the entire match, while the two teams combined for 156 digs.

The Skyhawks were led by senior Ella Butler, who tallied 13 kills and two solo blocks. Freshman Cambria Freymuth shined in her debut with her first career double-double, posting 11 kills, 17 digs, and four aces. Senior Ryli Kalahiki notched a career-high 10 kills on the right side. Freshman Arianna Reyna and junior Adalyn Garn combined for 29 assists, while senior libero Chloe Ruhl added 17 digs.

After surrendering the opening point on an error, the Skyhawks rattled off six straight—highlighted by a pair of kills from Freymuth—to force an early NMHU timeout. Fort Lewis maintained control with kills from Butler and Jordan DeJesus to build a 12-7 lead. The Cowgirls pulled within three at 14-11, but Freymuth's third kill sparked another run, and the Skyhawks cruised to a 25-17 win.

Set two was a back-and-forth battle. A solo block from Butler and back-to-back DeJesus kills helped Fort Lewis push ahead 11-6, later growing the lead to 15-8. NMHU chipped away and eventually tied the set at 21, 23, and 24-all, but Alina Nunez delivered the decisive kill for a 26-24 Skyhawk victory.

The Cowgirls flipped momentum in set three, using a pair of scoring runs to build a 20-12 lead. Despite late kills from Kalahiki and Caroline Munson, NMHU closed it out 25-19 for its first set win of the match.

Fort Lewis responded with authority in the fourth, opening with a 6-0 surge capped by consecutive Freymuth aces to go up 10-4. The Skyhawks kept the pressure on with steady attacking and forced errors from NMHU, ultimately taking the set 25-18 while holding the Cowgirls to just .026 hitting.

Match Two: Western New Mexico 3, Fort Lewis 2
Freymuth notched her second double-double of the day with 15 kills and 11 digs. Junior libero Emery Pomroy anchored the defense with a career-high 28 digs and six assists. Butler had another strong outing with 14 kills on .435 hitting, and DeJesus added 12 kills on .321 efficiency. Reyna dished out 24 assists while Garn contributed 17.

The Skyhawks came out hot in the opening set, with Reyna serving them to an early 5-1 lead. But a Mustang 8-1 run flipped momentum, and despite late kills from Nunez and Munson, WNMU closed on a 6-2 push to win 25-22.

Fort Lewis evened the match in the second. Balanced scoring and a Garn service ace helped build a 19-13 lead. The Skyhawks fought off a late Mustang surge that erased five set points before an NMHU attack error ended it, 25-23.

The third set was all Fort Lewis. Behind kills from Freymuth and Nunez, the Skyhawks surged to a 19-11 advantage and benefited from eight Mustang errors to win decisively, 25-15.

The fourth was tightly contested, with Fort Lewis rallying to tie the set at 16-all after three DeJesus kills. Butler later gave the Skyhawks a brief lead at 17-16, but WNMU responded down the stretch, capitalizing on Fort Lewis errors to escape with a 25-23 win.

The deciding fifth was a thriller. Freymuth and DeJesus powered Fort Lewis to leads of 11-10 and 12-11, and DeJesus later delivered a kill to give the Skyhawks match point at 14-13. But out of a timeout, the Mustangs scored the final three points to steal the set 16-14 and claim the match.
