DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's basketball returned to the win column on Saturday, benefiting from its best performance at the free throw line this season to run away with a 72-53 victory over Westminster University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Fort Lewis College improved to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in league play while Westminster dipped to 3-9 on the year and 0-6 in the RMAC.

The Skyhawks went 15-of-20 from the stripe (75 percent) compared to a 9-of-15 mark for the Griffins. Fort Lewis was efficient from the floor as well, shooting over 40 percent for the sixth time this season. Additionally, the team was 42.9 percent from three to mark the second-best efficiency this season. Saturday's game marked the first time this season where Fort Lewis has been more efficient beyond the arc than they are in overall field goal percentage.

Defense was a bright spot as well with Fort Lewis coming away with 45 rebounds and seven blocks. Westminster committed 22 turnovers, and Fort Lewis earned 15 steals in the win.

Sophomore Katie Lamb led the team with 16 points while going 4-of-7 from three. Junior Makaya Porter followed with 14 points to go along with three steals. Junior Natalie Guanella rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points. Sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez enjoyed a complete game with seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals while freshman Savanna Dotray led the team with five steals.

The teams played to a trio of tied scores through the opening minutes of the first quarter before Lamb sparked a lead with her first three of the game. Westminster trimmed the difference to one point in the final seconds, but a three-pointer from Palacio Gámez ended the first quarter in a 15-11 Fort Lewis lead.

Lamb began the second quarter with another shot from deep before Westminster scored four-straight to make it 18-15. The teams traded baskets, but a 14-0 scoring run by the Skyhawks gave them a 34-17 lead with 1:46 to go. The Griffins snapped the streak with a layup and ended the half with a lone free throw to make it 34-20 heading into the break.

The third quarter saw the Fort Lewis lead grow to as many as 19 points after a three-pointer from Laisha Armendariz fell with four minutes on the clock. Westminster enjoyed a 9-2 scoring run to pull within 12 points, followed by traded points at the stripe to make it a 49-38 lead for Fort Lewis heading into the final quarter.

For the third-straight quarter, Lamb opened play with a made field goal to maintain the sizable lead. The teams struggled to find rhythm midway through the quarter, resulting in a scoring run that saw Westminster make it a three-possession game. Despite the late pressure, the Skyhawks regained composure and ended play on a 14-2 scoring run to take the win.
