Fort Lewis routs Western Colorado at home, 89-63

Five Skyhawks reach double figures in impressive defensive effort

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis men's basketball (7-5) rang in the new year at home in dominant fashion on Thursday night, posting a resounding 89-63 victory over Western Colorado University (5-8, 3-2) and climbing to an unbeaten 5-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Skyhawks were stingy up and down the hardwood, snatching a season-high 15 steals on 21 forced turnovers while also holding the Mountaineers to 34.4 percent (21-61) shooting from the field. More impressively, Fort Lewis clamped down to hold Western Colorado's Aidan McDowell, NCAA Division II's leading scorer, to just 21 points on 5-of-11 shooting (45.5 percent) and seven points below his season average (28.1 points per game) heading into tonight. Tyler Halligan, who came into tonight as the Mountaineers' second-best and the RMAC's fifth-best scorer at 17.6 points per game, managed just six points.

Offensively, Fort Lewis cruised on an efficient 49.3 percent (37-75) mark from the floor, despite struggling from beyond the arc at 26.3 percent (5-19), and at the free throw line at 62.5 percent (10-16). Both sides hauled in 41 rebounds, but it was the Skyhawks who dominated the post with a season-high 60 points in the paint, not to mention their 24 points off turnovers.

Stewart Erhart and Jaxon Smith matched one another with a team-high 17 points each, Erhart by way of an 8-for-16 performance (50 percent) from the field with a three-pointer in his pocket and Smith by way of a 5-for-13 night (38.5 percent) from the floor and a 5-for-5 night at the free throw line. Smith is now 47-for-51 for the season at the charity stripe and leads the RMAC, and ranks tenth in DII, with a 92.2 percent clip. Aiding the duo were Chuol Deng and Keither Florence with 11 points each, and Cassius Carmichael with a final 10 points to round out those in double figures.

Erhart stuck to his pesky ways, matching his career-high seven steals for the second time this season, and third time in 24 consecutive games, while also making a career-high six assists. Erhart stands alone at the top of the RMAC with 34 steals and an average of 3.4 steals per game–a mark that would also rank second in all of DII. Trey Curry, a mid-year true freshman transfer who joined the Skyhawks just days ago, settled in comfortably in his first collegiate start, tallying seven points, three assists, two steals, and a pair of rebounds in 16 minutes. Noah Hellem also tallied his first collegiate points, knocking down a turnaround jumper down the lane.
