Skyhawks in position to clinch third seed for RMAC Tournament on Wednesday

DURANGO, Colo. – Unable to find momentum or build into the offensive third, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team fell 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dirks Field in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) match to No. 17 nationally ranked Regis University.

The Rangers (10-3-3, 7-1-1 RMAC) used 16 shots and 10 shots on target to not only down the Skyhawks (9-5-2, 6-3 RMAC), but also solidify a four-point advantage in the conference standings over FLC and lock up the first or second overall seed and a first-round bye for the upcoming RMAC Tournament.

Fort Lewis, with 18 conference points, can clinch the third overall seed for the conference tournament and a quarterfinal match on Dirks Field on Sunday, Nov. 1, with a win at home on Wednesday.

Both sides took three corner kicks, and the Rangers committed 14 fouls to Fort Lewis' 11. The Skyhawks managed just six shots and only one on-frame while taking six cautions, two of which went to Noam Maggartou, who exited in the 74th minute and will sit out the final regular season match.

Regis went into halftime with a 1-0 lead after Johan Murllio scored a clean-up goal for his first in the 32nd minute following a Lucas Martin full-extension save at the left post on a free kick shot from Jan Grillitsch. The Rangers added their second in the 51st minute, when a cross through the box from Liam Corr found Francisco Ruiz, who took a touch to control before tucking his first goal inside the right post from 15 yards out.

Fort Lewis broke the shutout in the 69th minute when a free kick near the Skyhawks' bench landed in the box, and Jahan Sabzalian fired a shot that was blocked, but Fabrizio Aguilera was there to score the tap-in goal. Sabzalian earned his first collegiate assist and point.

RU would solidify the match moments later in the 71st minute, when a defensive breakdown allowed Liam Corr to provide his own service into the area and claim a punch-in open-net goal after a failed clearing touch.
