Fort Lewis falls to Chadron State in RMAC Halloween contest

Schmitten drills 44-yard field goal for lone score

CHADRON, Neb. – Fort Lewis Skyhawks football (2-6, 1-6 RMAC) fell 34-3 on Saturday afternoon on Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium to Chadron State College (4-5, 3-4 RMAC) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Halloween contest.
 
Fort Lewis suffered its sixth-straight loss after managing just 220 yards of offense, backed by a single score on a 44-yard field goal attempt from Lucas Schmitten. Schmitten's second attempt from 34 yards in the fourth quarter was blocked by Cedar Amiotte, marking the third blocked kick of the afternoon by the Eagles, including a pair of blocked punts by Noah Shoemaker and Mason Kiewiet.
 
Conversely, Chadron State's Shay Pritchard went 2-for-3 on field goal attempts, converting from 47 and 38 yards with a miss from 39 yards. Pritchard supplemented the Eagles offense that posted a steady 298 yards of offense, 133 rushing yards and 165 passing yards, behind a three-touchdown effort from quarterback Aidan Thompson. Thompson finished the day 12-for-21 for 165 yards and passing scores from 33 yards, 28 yards, and six yards, respectively. Reid Sprague also made a 20-yard return for a touchdown on a blocked punt.
 
Skyhawks quarterbacks went a combined 23-for-44 from the pocket for 199 yards and three interceptions. Senior Jacob Morris led the quartet with 109 of those yards and two interceptions. Junior Solomon Latimer made five catches for a team-high 49 yards. Freshman KhaVontae Pual ran for team-high 10 yards on four carries.
 
Fifth-year safety Elijah Portela was the culprit behind Fort Lewis' lone takeaway as he picked off Thompson for his second pick of the season and fourth of his career. Junior defensive end Michael Delap led the defense with six tackles, including a pair of tackles for loss and a four-yard sack. Fifth-year defensive end Walter Stauffer led all players with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks for seven yards, with an assist on half a sack from sophomore defensive lineman Talan Flores.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis suffered its sixth consecutive loss this year, and sixth-straight loss at the hands of Chadron State.
-The Skyhawks trail the Eagles 36-5 all-time and 20-2 in Chadron, Neb.
-Jacob Morris returned for the first time since defeating New Mexico Highlands back on Sept. 12, and led all Skyhawks quarterbacks with 13 completions and 109 yards.
-Elijah Portela made his second interception of the season, and fourth of his career, to match Drennan Dowell for the most picks by a Skyhawk thus far.
-Lucas Schmitten converted a field goal from 44 yards, while his second attempt from 34 yards was blocked. Schmitten moved to 12-for-16 on field goal attempts this year.
-Michael Delap led all Skyhawks with six tackles.
-Talan Flores recorded his first career sack.

The Mavericks defeated New Mexico Highlands University (3-6, 1-6 RMAC) 59-46 earlier today.
