(RV) Skyhawks battle to 2-2 draw with Hardrockers; advance to RMAC Semifinal as Martin saves a pair

Fort Lewis remains unbeaten by South Dakota Mines

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It was a nail-biting, thrilling case of Déjà vu for the Fort Lewis men's soccer team tonight at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Senior goalkeeper Lucas Martin, back in 2024, saved the sixth penalty kick attempt against Metropolitan State University of Denver to send the Skyhawks into the RMAC semifinals, and tonight, he outdid himself, saving the third and fifth attempts from the spot by South Dakota Mines to send Fort Lewis back into the RMAC semifinals and to a rematch at No. 2 nationally ranked and second-seeded Colorado State University Pueblo (13-0-3) on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium in Pueblo, Colo.

Fort Lewis (10-5-3) fired off 14 of its 21 shots in the opening half and took all seven corner kicks for the night, to go up 1-0 in the 39th minute. Francisco Pinto sent a ball across from the near post, and a spill just outside the line gave William Bretvik the chance to poke in his RMAC leading 11th goal of the campaign. Pinto tied the RMAC lead with his 10th assist.

Freshman defender Iver Høihjelle extended the lead to two-nil in the 54th, firing a golazo, and a candidate for the Skyhawks goal of the year, to the top-right corner after a pair of connecting passes from Bretvik and Noam Maggartou, who picked up their second and sixth assists, respectively.

South Dakota Mines (8-5-5) would not back down in its program's first-ever postseason appearance, and the Hardrockers quickly rifled 15 of its 21 shots and all four corner kicks to equalize and force overtime. Shon West scored his first goal of the season in the 57th minute with a header inside the penalty box from a free kick by Parker Yocom.

Later in the 79th minute, a scramble in the area saw Martin withstand the first shot from the Hardrockers and save the second, but the final rebound found an unmarked Bennett Dykstra, who tapped in his second goal of the season. Martin made the lone save by either goalkeeper through both overtime periods.

Pinto, Maggartou, Raul Baptista Filipe, and Fabrizio Aguilera each converted from the spot in penalty kicks. Yocom and Erik Castanon converted the first two attempts for South Dakota Mines. Through the final three attempts by SDM, Martin saved Lucas Miranda's attempt, got a hand to Nickolas North's converted attempt, and dove left yet again to save Ethan French's final attempt, and sent the Skyhawks into the next round.
