Men’s basketball to challenge Colorado Mesa, Western Colorado in pivotal RMAC games

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis men's basketball team (14-7, 12-2 RMAC) is set to continue its 2025-26 slate on Thursday and Saturday, with a pair of vital Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games on the road at Colorado Mesa University (15-7, 11-3 RMAC) and Western Colorado University (7-15, 5-9 RMAC), respectively. Tip-offs are set for 7:30 p.m. against the Mavericks and 3 p.m. against the Mountaineers.  
 
Heading Down the Stretch
Fort Lewis is headed for dramatics down the final stretch of the regular season, with the Skyhawks currently sitting atop the RMAC with a 12-2 record and holding a one-game lead over Colorado Mesa and No. 20-ranked Black Hills State University (18-4, 11-3 RMAC), in addition to the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Yellow Jackets. After Thursday night, Fort Lewis will prepare for a crucial rematch against South Dakota Mines (9-13, 6-8 RMAC), who FLC topped 86-81 on the road (Jan. 15), at home on Senior Night, before heading for a daunting Massari Arena and a Thursday night showdown at Colorado State University Pueblo (16-7, 10-5 RMAC), who sit fourth in the league's standings under first-year head coach Zach Ruebesam, who has the ThunderWolves at 11-2 at home this year.
 
Top Marks
Second-year head coach Jordan Mast has had the Skyhawks playing with toughness and tempo since his arrival in Durango, and this year, it has Fort Lewis leading the conference and ranking among the best nationally in key categories. First, the Skyhawks rank first in the RMAC in rebounding (39.2 rpg) and first in offensive rebounds per game (14.0). Paired with 12.4 steals on 19.1 forced turnovers per game, marks that rank fourth and sixth across all of NCAA Division II, Fort Lewis has maintained steadfast control of the pace in every game. Free throws have also played a vital role in the Skyhawks success this year, as Fort Lewis ranks fifth nationally in free throw attempts per game (27.3) and seventh in made free throws per game (19.6).

Maverick Momentum
Colorado Mesa rides into the week on a five-game win streak, including three-straight at home, following the Mavericks last loss, 85-63, to Black Hills State (Jan. 22). That loss was CMU's only at home this year, with the Mavericks boasting an 8-1 record in Brownson Arena. Most recently, Colorado Mesa thumped Regis University (1-19, 0-14 RMAC), 95-69, with six Mavericks scoring in double figures, led by a career-high 20 points from junior guard Ben Henderson. While five Mavs are averaging double figures this season, the group is paced by redshirt senior Ty Allred, who ranks second in the RMAC in both scoring (18.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg), while also sitting seventh in field goal percentage (50.7 percent) and total blocks (23).

Scouting Western Colorado
The Mountaineers are fresh off a 75-69 on the road at Metropolitan State University of Denver (7-15, 5-9 RMAC) behind a 21-point outing from sophomore guard Aidan McDowell, who ranks second in the nation, averaging 27.1 points per game on 46.7 percent shooting for the season. The Skyhawks and Mountaineers previously met five weeks ago in Durango, where Fort Lewis dominated from the opening bucket en route to an 89-63 victory. On Thursday, while Fort Lewis is in Grand Junction, Colo., the Mountaineers will face off with Adams State University (15-7, 9-5 RMAC).

Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis will return to the comforts of Whalen Gymnasium for its final two regular-season home games next week. The Skyhawks will play host to Chadron State College (5-17, 3-11 RMAC) for its annual Pink Game presented by CommonSpirit and Alpine Bank, and a 7:30 p.m. tip-off before welcoming South Dakota Mines (9-13, 6-8 RMAC) for its Senior Day and Black History Month games at 3 p.m.
