Women's basketball continues life on the road at No. 4 CMU and WCU

DURANGO, Colo. – With the regular-season winding down, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team embarks on its toughest road trip of the season when it heads to No. 4 Colorado Mesa University and Western Colorado University.

With six games remaining in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play, the Skyhawks sit at 7-7, tied for eighth place in the league. The top eight teams advance to the postseason tournament. Over the final stretch, Fort Lewis is set to face the current No. 1, No. 5, No. 7, No. 11, No. 13, and No. 15 teams in the conference standings. Fort Lewis has not advanced to the RMAC Tournament since the 2017-18 season.

Looking Back
The Skyhawks played to another split last week with a win over New Mexico Highlands and loss to Adams State. The road trip began in Alamosa where Fort Lewis suffered a 91-68 loss to the Grizzlies. Fort Lewis shot 34.1 percent from the field, 9.1 percent from three, and 50 percent from the free throw line. Adams State shot 58.7 percent from the field, made four three-pointers, and shot 54.2 percent from the stripe. Fort Lewis held a slight 42-40 rebounding advantage and forced 23 turnovers.

On Saturday, Fort Lewis rebounded with a commanding 78-58 victory over New Mexico Highlands. The Skyhawks shot 47.6 percent from the field and 35 percent from three, compared to 33.9 percent from the field and 25 percent from three for the Cowgirls. NMHU held a 41-37 rebounding edge but committed 24 turnovers, which led to 18 Fort Lewis points.

Scouting No. 4 Colorado Mesa
The Mavericks are one of the hottest teams in the country heading into this week's competition, sitting at 24-1 overall, thanks to 21 straight victories. The lone loss of the season came on the road against West Texas A&M in the second week of the season.

As a team, the Mavericks are shooting 43 percent from the field and 77.3 percent at the stripe to go along with 42.3 rebounds per game. The defensive dominance carries into ball handling, where Mesa forces 17.5 turnovers per game.

Mesa is led by Olivia Reed Thyne, one of the nation's most dominant players. Reed Thyne averages 20.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting over 60 percent from the field. Mason Rowland provides quality backup with 17 points per game and a team-best 82.3 percent mark at the free throw line. Rowland leads the way with 94 assists, followed by Mykaela Moore with 83.

Scouting Western Colorado
The Mountaineers are 11-9 overall and 9-5 in the conference after a weekend split. Western Colorado picked up a 73-64 win over Mines before falling to MSU Denver in a 62-55 final on the road.  Fort Lewis lost to Western Colorado at home in early January by a final score of 78-61.

As a team, the Mountaineers shoot 41.9 percent from the field, 38.4 percent from three, and 71 percent at the line. They pull down 37.4 rebounds per game to go along with 10.9 assists and 5.5 steals per game.

Three players average double-digit points, led by Livey Schmidt at 19.4 per game. Jayda Maves and Alyssa Eckroth follow with 13.9 and 12.6 points per game, respectively. Maves and Schmidt are two of the best three-point shooters in the country, both shooting over 46 percent this season. Schmidt is the leading rebounder at 6.8 per game, followed by Penelope Urquhart with 6.1 per game.
