Women's basketball wraps up RMAC schedule on the road

DURANGO, Colo. – It's the final week of the regular season for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team, which embarks on a road trip with a slot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament on the line.

With two games remaining in RMAC play, the Skyhawks sit at 9-9, tied for seventh place in the league. The top eight teams advance to the postseason tournament. In this, the final week of play, the Skyhawks will face the No. 7 and No. 13-ranked teams in the league. Fort Lewis has not advanced to the RMAC Tournament since the 2017-18 season.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks did exactly what they needed to do last week, earning two wins in front of their home crowd on Pink Night and Senior Day. First, Fort Lewis turned in a commanding 67-46 win over Chadron State. The team forced 37 turnovers while tallying 23 steals in the victory. Junior Natalie Guanella led the way with a season-high 16 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting performance. Sophomore Katie Lamb added 13 points and a game-high eight steals—tied for second most in program history. Freshman Savanna Dotray contributed 12 points, and freshman Alemaualii Fonoti chipped in six rebounds and a career-high four steals.

Saturday's game resulted in a gritty 62-56 decision over South Dakota Mines where Guanella once again led the team in scoring. Fort Lewis relied on a balanced defensive effort, finishing with 34 rebounds, eight steals, and two blocks. The Skyhawks shot 36.8 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range, and 75 percent from the free-throw line. South Dakota Mines shot 38 percent overall, 25 percent from deep, and 77.8 percent at the line.

Scouting CSU Pueblo
The Pack sits in a tie for seventh place in conference standings, alongside Fort Lewis, at 9-9 in RMAC play. Overall, CSU Pueblo is 13-13 on the year, 7-5 at home, and has lost two-straight after defeats to MSU Denver (86-85) and Colorado School of Mines (56-46) last week.

CSU Pueblo averages 63.9 points per game while shooting .380 from the floor. The team averages 7.6 threes and 11.5 free throws per game. On defense, the Pack pulls down 35.5 rebounds per game (-3.7) to go along with 10.6 steals and 2.7 blocks per game.

Seneya Martinez leads the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game while shooting .450 from the floor. Genesis Sweetwine follows with 9.5 per game, and six additional players put up at least five points per game. Dasani Nesbit leads rebounding at 6.7 per game, and from there it's evenly distributed with seven players at three or more per game. Sweetwine is the primary point guard, leading the team at 30 minutes per game to go along with 116 assists.
 
Scouting Colorado Christian
The Cougars enter this week's schedule with an overall record of 7-19 and a conference record of 4-14. They split results last week, first earning an 89-65 win over Regis before falling to MSU Denver in a 78-59 final. Fort Lewis played Colorado Christian at home on January 22 and earned an 81-71 win.

Colorado Christian averages 61.3 points per game on .373 shooting. The team shoots .285 from three and .740 at the line. On defense, the Cougars come away with 35.8 rebounds (-1.0) and 8.9 steals per game.

Individually, Jordon Heckert leads the team by averaging 13.5 points per game, followed by Ja'Shelle Johnson and Hayley Luther at 8.7 and 8.0 points per game, respectively. Heckert is the leading rebounder at 5.2 per game while Samantha Wattawa averages 4.8. Johnson leads the way in minutes per game at 33.1 to go along with 58 assists.
 
Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is averaging 69.5 points per game (+2.1) on .393 shooting from the floor. The team puts up 38.2 rebounds per game to go along with 13.3 assists. The Skyhawks lead the conference by averaging 13.2 steals per game.

The Skyhawks run a balanced attack, led by sophomore Katie Lamb who contributes 12 points per game. Junior Makaya Porter follows at 11.5 points per game, and five additional players average at least five points per game. Freshman Josie Davis is the leading rebounder at 4.8 per game, followed by freshman Alemaualii Fonoti and senior Ashten Martinez with 4.5 per game.

Sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez leads the team in minutes per game at 29.5, as well as leading the way with 81 total assists. Four players have at least 40 steals, led by Lamb and Porter at 59 and 54, respectively. Porter rounds out her stat line with a team-best 32 blocks.
