Women's basketball wraps up regular season with 85-58 win over Cougars

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team (19-10, 11-9 RMAC) closed out the regular season with a dominant 85-58 victory over Colorado Christian University (7-21, 4-16 RMAC), extending its winning streak to four games. The Skyhawks secured the No. 7 seed in the upcoming Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, marking the program's first postseason berth since 2018.

Fort Lewis shot an efficient 51.6 percent from the field, including 46.2 percent from three-point range. Colorado Christian shot 41.3 percent from the field and went 17-of-19 from the free-throw line. The Skyhawks outrebounded the Cougars 34-25 and forced 21 turnovers.

Junior Makaya Porter led the way with a career-high 26 points, shooting 11-of-15 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Junior Natalie Guanella added 14 points, while senior Laisha Armendariz and sophomore Katie Lamb combined for 23. Porter also contributed six rebounds and two blocks, while senior Ashten Martinez added five rebounds and four steals.

Fort Lewis opened the game with a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead at the 7:38 mark of the first quarter. The teams traded baskets before the Skyhawks held a narrow 10-9 edge heading into the media timeout. After a Colorado Christian free throw briefly tied the game, Armendariz knocked down a three-pointer to regain the lead. The teams exchanged threes and free throws, and Fort Lewis closed the quarter ahead 22-15.

The Cougars opened the second quarter with a layup, but a three-pointer from Palacio Gámez pushed the Skyhawks' lead to 25-17. Both teams experienced a brief scoring drought before Palacio Gámez connected from deep again. Back-to-back layups from Guanella extended the lead to 34-21 with 3:55 remaining in the half. After a strong defensive stretch by both teams, Colorado Christian ended its scoring drought with a layup. Porter responded with two three-pointers in the final minute, helping Fort Lewis take a commanding 44-27 lead into halftime.

Guanella reached double figures on the opening possession of the third quarter, and Lamb followed with a three-pointer to give the Skyhawks a 22-point advantage. Colorado Christian added a layup, but Fort Lewis answered with a 7-0 run midway through the quarter. After the Cougars converted two free throws, layups by Fonoti and Porter pushed the lead to 61-35. The Skyhawks continued to pull away, closing the third quarter with a 68-40 lead.

Porter remained in rhythm in the fourth quarter, hitting another three-pointer to extend the advantage to 71-40. Colorado Christian scored eight points over the next three minutes, but Fort Lewis maintained control. A three-pointer from Lamb with 3:03 remaining stretched the lead to 83-52. With a comfortable margin, the Skyhawks cruised to an 85-58 final.

Fort Lewis now turns its attention to the RMAC Tournament, which begins Tuesday. The Skyhawks will travel to Colorado Springs to face second-seeded UCCS, with game time to be announced.
